Wanting to start mini plant hobby, any suggestions?

I really like that idea! Especially since I intend on breeding bettas, and a planted tank is best. Water gardens are special because you can add colorful animals to them^-^ I would prefer one without any substrate though... Any suggestions?

You can keep the plants in pots or use floating plants like Guppy Grass ( used for many fry tanks ). This was a holding tank for plants at a club members' house.

I don't know if you can see this, but this is a waterfall style Paludarium.

There are tiered glass shelves of plants. The water is pumped up to the top shelf and trickles down among the plants and then the water gently trickles into the main part of the tank with submerged fully aquatic plants. Some of these were rare Hawaiian plants.

NOT my tank. Very unique tho.

With controlled lighting hours/intensity and small pots (contained root systems) you can force many plants/flowers to have stunted growth, and bloom mini sized flowers at your desired times... And because many annual flowers go from seed to bloom in a short time it doesn't require the devotion of a bonzi tree...

Those are all amazing! I created a little paludarium in a ten gal, kept some mosquito fish and tadpoles. It was dumped into the yard(not my idea), and now I use it for bettas. When I get older I should have things like the ones you all pictured above, but for now I'll stick to water gardens. My bettas will surely enjoy it! Maybe I'll have mini plants as well^-^

I was wondering if pom poms could be used as substrate for certain plants? They would make a nice colorful setup for see-through or well-ventilated pots.
Also, is there any way to color succulent plants without hurting them? Will food coloring water change it, or is it harmful to the plant? I know many people are against coloring plants, and I don't want to start a debate, I'm just curious. I rescued a purple plant just to find out that it was coated with paint, and I will peel it off so the plant can breathe.

Food color in potted plants will only have a minimal effect on light colored flowers (far less then cut flowers) and generally no negotiable effect on the plants, leaves or stems... It works on cuttings because you are bypassing the root system and biological intake/filtering system of the plant and basically giving it a direct injection...

Out here at Walmart etc. they have cactus with paper flowers glued on them. Several times I have shown that to would be buyers. I used to have a large cactus collection and it makes me mad to see stores trick people into buying them. No. 1 the flowers are fake and no.2 cactus flowers don't look anything like that. Plus many species of cactus have to be quite old before they bloom.
