Wanting to use rain water

Right now my shed has a shingle roof, I know I can't use that as drinking water. I don't have money to upgrade it to metal or corrugated pastic, but I'm considering using a large heavy duty tarp. Do you think that will be acceptable? Then the water would just fill a rain barrel and I'll be able to use nipple waterers.

I have a rain barrel that collects run-off from our house, which is covered in shingles. I've used it without any problems.
