In the us they're mainly domestic, I think the only wild one is the black footed ferret which is endangered. But in New Zealand where the OP is, they're an invasive species.I didn't realize ferrets were wild? I thought they were only domesticated.
I must have missed something. LOL No. Not native. They were brought here to get rid of rats. They have different sleep cycling. One of the biggest ecological disasters in Hawaii. Still lots of rats and now lots of mongoose.I meant more a species that isn't native there
Aloha! @PopoMyersOff topic, Aloha! Transplanted kama'aina here.
You know that's illegal in most places. Frowned upon by the wildlife and game people.Well, I don’t blame you, but I would have driven them far far away and released them.
Keeping safety in mind, removing a ferret from a live trap and attempting to dispatch it with an axe would not be a good idea. Two things would likely happen. First, it would rip you to shreds. Then it would escape. The OP, from what I can tell, used the best method they had available to them.Ferrets are invasive and would keep coming back for more. Killing them was not the wrong thing to do. They would continue to be a threat to his poor birds.
I also don’t agree with the way he chose to dispatch, I personally would use an axe or something more humane. But it is too late for that now. What is done is done. And unfortunately killing them was the necessary thing to do To protect his animals.
