And it is human instinct to protect what is ours.
I think different humans may have different base instincts they latch to, but I don't disagree. I didn't mean to make this a huge fight. I mentioned already we both have different opinions. All I said is that I would not have killed them. I would have found an alternate solution - be that giving them over to a wildlife protection service (after ensuring it re-homes not kills) or keeping them as pets, as long as they do not pose a sever danger to myself or person (you had them trapped in cages and at your mercy) and I am capable to do so.

Again, that is me, and I'm not saying you have to agree with me. I'm just telling you what I would do in the scenario. So don't tell me to agree with you, because as I mentioned, I have a difference of opinion here, and it's pretty well formed and not open to changing too much without really good arguments.

Maybe you should start your own thread to discuss your position. Now that you've let everyone know you can move along. 😊

I already said it was really sad about your birds, but the ferrets didn't have anything against your chickens - it was instinct

The difference is that these animals have been released into an environment where they have no natural predators whatsoever so can reproduce with absolutely no limits. We have a lot of pest animals that were released into New Zealand that are out of control and absolutely decimating our native wildlife. Many of our native animals are only safe on predator free offshore islands. That's the only place they can be safe because these animals just kill them because they are easy targets.

I used to be soft hearted too thinking I could never kill anything, but since moving to the country it's been very easy to do our bit and eliminate certain predators and pests from our block of land. We are proud of each and every possum and rat and mouse that we are able to kill in our humane traps that kill instantly. Yes, I feel sorry for the animals that do have to be killed, but they are in an environment that they were never meant to be in and they do not belong here. By killing them we are actually saving countless lives of animals who do belong here.

It's a huge change in attitude but I would love to see a Kakapo in real life but sadly I probably never will. They are the most beautiful birds, and they were saved from extinction but are only safe on three offshore islands. Unless you work for the Department of Conservation you'll never see one. I'd love to hear Kiwi calling at night, but between feral cats, rats, Australian brush-tail possums, ferrets, stoats, weasels, and peoples dogs going on killing rampages, I don't, and I should living where we do. We now see it as our responsibility to do our bit to save our native animals, and by trapping possums, also saving our native plants and trees.

Did you have to kill them? Could they not be released miles away from your property? Or do they come back?
you do know, releasing animals away is both more cruel and more likely illegal right?

where i live relocating an animal with out DNR permission is illegal, plus its more inhumane that animal could have disease, now you just spread it to an area that might not have had it, the animal has no idea where food and water is, and you might put it in a position where it has to fight for survival against an already established order of its species.

also forgot to say know you just gave the problem to someone else...
