A person can't possibly keep every predator out for certain without sticking the birds in a box. The ferrets dug underneath the boards and fencing to get in. A similar thing happened before my coop had a floor put in, and I lost three guineas as a result.
However, if you go that route, then you might as well just keep the birds inside your house, or not keep any birds at all. Then that keeps the chickens indoors or in a cage, while their predators live out and free to hunt whatever they please without limits.
Ferrets -- an invasive pest species -- free and living large, while the chickens are in a box. Think about that for a second.
