A Raven picked off a young brown squab I was trying to trap train today. It is now official I have declared war on the Raven population in my area. On the up side if I had to choose a bird to sacrifice in my flock she would have been the one. I think the Raven is also guilty of the mystery of what tore open the crop on my pouter as well .

Ravens are very smart and they work in teams at times to make them an even bigger threat. Very difficult to control. I've had a few run ins with them after baby chicks myself. I have had to eliminate a few ravens and even that proved to be difficult living in city limits.

Wish you the best.

the crow family is "The" Smartest bird family on the planet. you thought parrots were smart? think again, they dont pass the "Mirror Test" they are not "Self Aware" the Corvidae family is

My crow family usually keeps ravens at bay but today they were asleep at the switch. The crows started bringing nesting material in about 200 yards from the house but I am thinking they have must of abandoned that site (do not see them working there as of late).

Two ravens took after 5 of my adult pigeons today. One was perched in a tree on the edge of my neighbours lot. The other took into chasing my birds and began driving them toward the other bird waiting in ambush. Long story short my 5 homers all made it back safe and sound. The ravens turned up empty. I never had an opportunity to get a shot at them. I think the raven's drove off the nesting crows I have not seen them lately.

In northern WI. my grandparents used to have to put out suet and scrap meat, to keep the ravens at bay when the weather was or would get worse, but one of the years we had one of the worst winters the ravens drove off rest of large birds they couldnt eat, and ate all the rodents from tiny mice, chipmunks, squirrels, to large rabbits, and when those were gone they were mobbing cats and some small dogs, killing at least one to three dogs and many cats. they killed one younger or older redtail hawk too. they gang up in huge flocks in winter when times are tough, and can be terrors, as aside from results, seen them mob and kill some of the cats, and one of the dogs even. good luck with them, as i love them but now realize they can clash with pets if they can kill keen wildlife and stronger strays and even cared for fit to fat pets in winters so harsh and flip flopping as these lately. if it makes you feel better one of my new white racer pairs sat on a clutch of eggs half the time, then just one night stopped sitting and couldnt even be put to stay back on the nest, so the next day the chicks inside were dead and dog food, but very healthy looking aside.
at least i know i have one fertile healthy pair though i guess.. the others will seem to start to bond and nest but abandon idea soon and then just pace trying to get outside and probly go home. anyone else have problems getting good grade homers to nest in new home? these are i think all supposedly pretty young birds and were nesting ect when got i think, as were all grunters and "broody" except maybe the one crested (guy had no other crested birds and said was only one like that that just came out that way) female that layed a week after i got her.
