Warm 'Hello' from Southern Idaho!!

Hello fellow chicken enthusiast!! I'm relitivly new to the BYC community and a bit green to chicken ownership as well. Hubby and I got 10 australorp chicks this March from the local farm supply store 9 made it to hen-hood. It's been a wonderful experience so far. We convered a shed in our back yard to serve as the coop and built a 10x8 run that seems to serve its purpose quite well. I also free range them 3-4 days a week.View attachment 1875575 View attachment 1875576 The hens are definaitly my labor of love but the hubby gets to enjoy some of thier quirks when he chooses to also!
The ladies have just started to lay thier first eggs this week which is very exciting of course! The first egg I found was quite an oddity, it was shell-less! Any of you experienced odd eggs such as that with your pullets? havent had any weird ones since!

Lovely being part of the community,

Hello, Willow, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
It is very common for pullets to lay soft shelled and shell-less eggs. They may also lay a normal egg or two then another softie. It takes time for their reproductive systems to fully mature.
How do you get your pullets from the coop to the run? They don't look to be connected.

DobieLover, Thank you for the welcome! I'm hearing this truth about odd pullet eggs again and again. It has definitely put my mind to ease! As far as the coop/run connection, just behind the main coop door there is a little corridor with a ramp leading out to the chicken run. (: I may post more/better pictures at a later date theres still a few things I would like to tweak with the coop/run

Had a huge tree like yours, we called it Tree Zilla. It was declining after 50 years of growth and had to have it removed before it fell on the house. So $$$ meant for gutter guards ended up paying for tree removal. $2420.:(.

Everyone around us has Maple trees and all the junk ends up in our gutters :rant:mad:.

Wowza! Sorry to hear that Diva :-( fortunatly these trees seem quite healthy. We have a pine tree in our backyard that is probably going to have to come down sometime in the next 5 years. I collected all the dry leaves last fall for my coop bedding this year and it was a wonderful investment of my time. So I'm eternally greatful for all the trees my neighbors and I have, free bedding is always a bonus:) The biggest hassle is my pine tree.. Its constantly dropping pinecones all summer and needles in fall. It takes forever to rake them up and I really haven't found a way to recycle them on my property. The needles take forever to breakdown in the compost bin so Im not trying that again this year lol.
