Just want to give folks a heads up that you need to be very careful about buying birds in Canton, TX. I saw lots of folks that had nice chickens that appeared very well cared for...unfortunately for me...they did not have the breed that I wanted. I bought from a dealer that had a lot of birds of all kinds...crammed in cages. The hens were large but once we got them home... they apparently had never been out of a cage...they don't roost...they don't scratch around...and they sure don't lay eggs. On top of this, one began looking poorly, very listless and she died today. The others don't have any symptoms but just don't act like backyard birds. I think this newbie probably bought someone's spent and/or diseased hens. Luckily I had isolated them from my others...thanks to all of you that have been doing this a lot longer than I.
