Warning: sad, disturbing story

My next-door-neighbor shot and killed himself about ten years ago, he had horrible medical problems and just didn't want to continue. He was bedridden, used a pillow to muffle the shot - I'm less than 60' from his bedroom window and I didn't hear it, I was sitting right by my computer window....

Suddenly every single police official from the state police, three local towns, the sherrif's department, I couldn't believe how many cops were next door, the cars lined the street! What people don't know is, at least around here, it's treated as a crime scene until they make sure the person actually did shoot themselves. They tested the wife's and daughter's hands for gunpowder and grilled them for hours, it was so traumatic for them. Suicide is an awful thing.

I also worry about this will financially mean to hte wife. I've always heard that when someone commits suicide their retirement, social security, etc. is forfitted.

I think that depends on where the pension comes from, how long since retirement, etc. I know my neighbor didn't lose anything but having to pay for hazmat to clean the 'crime scene' (biohazzard) and I think they had to pay some other costs. It's just plain sad.
