Warning to predators - have you heard of this? A little gruesome...

I was complaining to a neighbor about the coyotes - we live on a farm and I'd hear them run through almost every night - and he told me that if we shoot one and hang it on a fence on the back of our property that it would "scare off" other coyotes. I don't know if it's coincidence, but we did that about a year ago and I haven't seen or heard another coyote since. That dead one is gone - the buzzards eventually ate it - and the guy that manages the farm has done it a couple more times and hung them in a couple of different places.

It sounds like hooey voodoo to me but I can't deny that I haven't seen or heard any since then.

Has anyone else heard of that? And I wonder if it would work for possums and/or raccoons?

Though I agree that coyotes are a major problem, I can't deny it's a little cruel and gruesome. I have never heard of doing that. We usually just make sure all of the animals are safe in their coops before dusk, and if it's possible for the coyotes to get in, people here in washington usually put an electric wire around the bottom edge of their coop/run.

I've never heard of it. And yes, it sounds just plain creepy. But hey, if it works.... I may try what Gatsbysmum said first though.

Yes, I've heard of it. I knew many cattle or sheep/goat ranchers in Texas growing up. They would never miss an opportunity to shoot coyotes and some would hang them up on fence posts. I don't think any of them really believe in it, but they would tell you about it.
