ALWAYS PUT CHCIKEN WIRE ON TOP YOUR BROODERS PEOPLE!!!!

This will catch the heat lamp if it should fall.

Putting chicken wire on top of your brooder will not always work, it depends on how your brooder is set up. My heat lamps are secured with screws, they aren't going anywhere.
 
I hang white chains that I bought at Home Depot from the ceiling. Then I hang everything including feeders and waterers and lamps with hooks. I attach the hooks permanently to the handles of the waterers', feeders', and lights' handles. That way, their weight keeps them from falling off the chain accidentally.

WOW, you are very lucky. I wonder what kept those shavings from catching on fire? I double hang mine on the outside of the brooder with a wire top on it.
 
I am glad it was not windy. A good gust of fresh air would have ignited the embers I am sure.
