Wart like growth on beak

I have this on one of my golden cuckoo marans. Sometimes she runs into things and it breaks open and bleeds. She is totally healthy otherwise, active, eats, drinks, and is one of the most outgoing chickens. I just assumed it was some deformation or wart without considering the possibility that it could be harmful... I'd love any other insight about this. Especially Kara1015, you had birds die because of this?

I too have a Black Copper Marans hen suddenly showing this. She is a year old this month. Very strange as it seems the breed is prone to it.

I haven't seen one like that. Poor thing. Is it extending into her mouth? Is it blocking her nostrils inside or her esophagus? Is it hard, like beak?
One of my red sex links had a little hard bubble shaped bump on top of her beak just in front of her face/comb. She is now 2 1/2 years old and very healthy. The bump has changed shape over time, more than once. It also bleeds if she bumps it into something. No serious blood, just red around the injured edge.

Sorry that it has been so long that you posted. Where do you live? That could be canker, a protozoan infection. Have you seen any cases of fowl pox lately, which is a virus spread by mosquitoes? It can cause brown scabs about the face and comb, but also can cause yellow patches inside the mouth and throat. Canker, an infectious disease may be more likely. It is treated with metronidazole (Flagyl, FishZole) which are available from a vet and online from fish and pigeon suppliers. Dosage is 250 mg daily split into 2 doses, for 5 days.Here is some info about both:

Oral Canker

Canker is a condition mostly associated with pigeons and is caused by a tiny parasite called trichomonas. This parasite is often spread through contaminated drinking water. The parasite causes a ‘yellow button’ of pus to form in your bird’s mouth. This can stop your bird from eating normally leading to weight loss.

What to look for

• Weight loss
• Birds picking up food then dropping it
• A cheese-like plaque in your birds mouth (see photo)
• A reluctance to eat

Treatment

Treating canker or suspected canker is a job for a vet who will likely prescribe an anti-parasitic medication.
Prevention

Ensure that your birds' drinking water is changed daily. Try to keep the drinkers in the chicken house to discourage wild birds from sharing your birds’ water.

I still would love to know what these growths are. The fact that they frequently show up in Marans is intriguing and a little concerning. One of my FBCMs developed it as a mature hen (1 year) and has now had it for 7 months. I wonder if it is some type of tumour/growth that Marans are predisposed to, like crossbeak in Ameraucanas and EE crosses. I hope it is a benign condition.
