Hi!

I have 2 little 1-2 week old NN's and one of them has a wart on her neck? It's not red or crusty and doesn't seem to be bothering her... but she was ugly enough... now she's naked AND WARTY?? Bleh! Haha! Man I picked a looker!

Is it anything to worry about? (Sorry don't have a pic... I can take one though if you want!)

Thanks!

Wow it took me a long time to get this picture posted!! Today I went out to spend time with the birds and saw that Marilyn's (Marilyn Monroe's!) neck was all red and bloody! The other chicks had pecked the lump and made it bleed! So I've separated her, cleaned the wound and have applied some Blu-Kote to it... Is there anything else I should be doing? Yesterday it was still just a lump, not open like it was this morning...

Here are the pics...

Before BK... When I noticed it! (Luckily I was taking pics this morning and got a picture before I blu-koted it!!

After cleaning and BK... Doesn't she look humiliated???

Any ideas (or just encouragement!) would be great! This is my first chicken injury!

Thanks!!

You are doing a fine job with her, I would keep her seperated for a time as NNs tend to be a little more agressive than many other breeds when younger especially. In the area that the lump was it could have been an earlobe trying to form. It doesn't really look like a pecking injury either unless you caught it right as it started. Chickens will go into a feeding frenzy at anything red. I'm still thinking ingrown feather and maybe she scratched it and opened it up.

I think you're right... I bet she scratched it and opened it... Then yesterday morning while I was out there the others were grabbing it and TWISTING it!! OUCH! That's when I grabbed her and cleaned it up. She's in isolation and HATING it!

There is no lump on the other side... so I don't know if it was an earlobe... Wouldn't there be something on the other side in the same spot?

I've only got 2 NNs... Her and her (I think) brother. All the others are a mixed lot of "normal" layers.

How long do you think this will take to heal?

Thanks!!

It seems that chickens have a long memory for picking at spots like that so I would put her back out there while you can watch them and intervene if needed. It will take about a week to heal completely.

I went and looked at some of our chicks this evening and they have a little fold of skin that is even with the jaw line. Some however don't have it and some just have it on one side. I've never looked at them that young and close before and feel that I have learned something new.
