And please, moderators, if this is the wrong section, move it to where it belongs.
I am in a rural area of West Central Indiana and where I live no one lets their chickens free range because we are in a town, albeit a really SMALL town (50 people max), and each house sits on an acre of land. My neighbors across the street are now talking about letting some of their chickens out to do a little running around in their yard from time to time, and I am thinking about doing that too in a few more weeks. No one out here has fencing, so if the chickens wander off our property, we'd have to go get them and bring them back. Now, I don't know if anyone has read my thread in the family section about my insane neighbors (not the ones with the chickens) that have been giving everyone such hell lately. My question is, if a chicken did manage to wander onto their property, do they have the right to shoot it/ keep it, or call the cops on us or my other neighbors? I'm new to Indiana and so far, what little interaction I've had with the sheriffs has left me thinking they don't even know much about rules and ordinances. I could just see this idiot outside just waiting to grab one of my birds and refusing to give it back. Of course I plan to do everything I can to keep them on my property, but I just can't afford to fence in a whole acre of land. I'm thinking of moveable fencing, but if I get that, it won't be very tall, and I'm afraid some of birds might make it over the fence. I am just wondering what they can, and can't get away with. These are the same people that snuck onto another neighbor's property when they weren't home, took their dog off his leash and brought it back to their house, and then called the police and said the dog had gotten off their leash and had come onto their property and was eating their flowers. A flat out lie, we all know it. I just don't trust this guy. I also think he's been sneaking onto my property in the middle of the night, but I lock my coop and I have from the very first day we had it up. If anyone is familiar with Indiana laws, please enilighten me. I will research them on my own in the meantime. Thanks everyone.

First, I need to say that I don't know a thing about showing birds so I can't help you there but I wanted to say that I'm sorry for you and your daughter's disapointment. I have 3 kids and know how it feels when your child is hurting and you can't find a way to fix it. Hang in there and I'm sure you will get some good advice from the great people here. Also, we don't show but get so much pleasure from these great pets. Don't loose sight of the fun and rewards of the birds themselves. Maybe you can be creative and have your own backyard chicken show! Post your daughter's birds photos here and let the members comment on the beauty of the birds. Show standards are only one way of measuring quality. Take care.

You can always show pending their aren't any auto disqualifies, check APA standards just don't expect to win.

Side note think you posted in the wrong section, this is more for laws etc.

I would suggest sell off the new order coming in and what you can part with from your existing flock (the ones you don't want or need for egg production), with the intent of those funds going towards eggs/chicks from SQ birds. When approached to the kids in the right way and time they really do understand that space/money is an issue and this is a way for them to get the birds they want and need for show. I have seen the cost of SQ potential birds and it breaks my heart for the kids.

Mine have been debating if they want to show next year, I only have 1 out of 50+ that would maybe stand a chance. They rest are our egg layers. Not sure where we would pull funds from for our kid's chickens. I have a few that I plan on getting rid of to make room and free up funds for more. Does that make sense?

find breeds you all would like to raise, one each or the same breeds.. anymore and it's quite difficult to maintain and raise really good birds..

when you find those breeds join the clubs. Find you a old timer that has raised them for 50+ years and STICK TO THEM LIKE GLUE.. Learn as much as you can and ask as many questions as possible.. That way then you know the whole history, ups and downs of showing/owning that breed, care, etc etc.. and maybe.. if you find the right kind.. and they hear about you're situation they may slide you some birds cheap or free.

Coming from a teen here..

True. To me, chickens are just pets. Pets with benefits (eggs), but still just pets. My 9 year old is a highly competitive child, and to show and NOT win, it would be like a waste to her. Not to mention emotionally painful. She does love all of the birds and each one has a name and get loved individually every day. She sings to them, rocks them like babies (they love it!), and loves to pick fresh clover and dandelions for them daily just for the sheer pleasure of seeing them come running with joy at the new "yummies" she is bringing them. She doesn't want to get rid of a single bird and just the thought of sending any of the roosters to "freezer camp" sends her into fits of angry tears. Not that I would have the heart to do something like that. I suppose we just have to figure out how to invest in another coop, and then to invest in some show quality birds. Now my mission is to find breeders with good stock. Only problem with that is most of the breeders are out of state, and to get their birds my best bet is to buy their eggs and incubate them myself, and that comes back to the whole "born after October" issue. I don't know what to do. I'm just confused. It's been a long day, I'm tired, and I guess maybe a bit emotional. I just want to know what some other BYC'ers think would be my best route. (and if anyone knows of someone selling an inexpensive coop here in Central Indiana, please let me know!)

This topic 180 completely, but to help you with your problem once the chicken leaves your property I see no (legal) reason your neighbor can't call the police or have there dog kill it if it is on their property. That being said they couldn't just keep it because it would be theft, shooting it would be iffy but probably still legal (depends a lot on local laws).

Thank you, that is very good advice. I think I will pick one specific breed to use strictly for show. Now, what breed is a good choice for a 9 year old girl, a little on the small side, that will be gentle and easy to handle? She's "ok" on Cochins. We have Bantams. The Wyandottes are a little too feisty for her, though I love them. I think something small, so something Bantam. Any recommendations? What she already has in Bantam are:
1 Mille Fleur d'Uccle
1 Golden Laced OEGB
1 GL Sebright
3 White Silkies
1 Black Silkie mix and...
11 Cochins

Everything else is Standard size:
1 Jersey Giant (or could be a Minorca, or an Australorp, not sure yet)
2 EE's
1 GLW (though she seems to be small for her breed)
3 Sexlinks
1 Mystery chicken (suspect it could be a Cuckoo Maran cross of some sort, very pretty bird)
1 Turken and
6 SLW's
I don't have anything of show quality (or else I wouldn't be in this dilemma right now), but if I had to choose just one breed, something good for her, and good to raise, is there something I have that I could try to get "quality" stock of? Me, I'm more leaning toward Sebrights. My Pip has stolen my heart completely...

it mainly depends on what you like, Do you like small, soft, Fluffy, chickens with a nice temper? Go with something like silkies, Or do you like hard feathered, small, spunky chickens? all of the game bantams would be great for that.. i raise the old english's. But both of those breeds have a lot of competition, if you'd like something with a little less competition try some of the beautiful rare breeds.. You could also make them more popular then.
