So i had a few of my chicks out today, they are fully feathered, the sun was going down and as i was picking up my tools from working on the coop one of them (a seabright) was making a constant noise, she was low to the ground and her tail feathers were pointed up and fanned out. What is that behavior? Never seen it before. Needless to say, i stopped grabbing tools and brought them in.

Nope shes (assuming she) completely normal. But i was fully in aw at how pretty her tail feathers looked!!!

chickens do use their tail for balance. If she was walking and was surprised by something under her feet she could have made a quick move to readjust her balance or was simply a reflex motion of some sort. If nothing else concerning is present I would not worry about her.

No she was laying in the dirt chirping chirping chirping away.. ive watched videos of people petting their female chickens and thats what it kinda looked like I wasnt petting her and her tail feathers were up and spread. Im definitely not worried, just couldnt figure out the behavior and what it meant. So not good with reading chickens lol

So i guess she/he is just growing up. From a Google image search, looks like its normal for a seabright to hold their tail feathers like that lol so maybe she/he was happy to be out there? I'll catch on eventually lol
