I purchased a 1 1/2-year-old breeding pair of Sweetgrass turkeys today, $60 for the pair. I also bought 3 Royal Palm juveniles from last spring at $15 a piece; they are all 3 supposed to be hens, but I think they are still too young to age them. Was this a good deal or did I get ripped off?

It's all in your location and the local market. I get $75 for a breeding pair of Sweet5grass. Poults from last spring should be old enough to be sexed. I get $25 each for poults old enough to be sexed

After further inspection, I have decided that they are not Sweetgrass. I believe they are a Pencilled Palm of some kind or a Narragansett.

1st two pictures are the tom, and the 2nd two pictures are the hen:

The female is a Narragansett. The male is some sort of semi-pencilled (Pnpn).
Unfortunately I can't see the color well enough to determine the exact phenotype. Can you make pictures of his fan? Especially the color would be from importance.

He wouldn't strut or let me touch him, so the pictures aren't great.

Looks like a Semi-Pencilled Golden Black-Winged Narragansett (semi-gray) [b'b' Ccg Rr nn]. I had one a couple years ago. Do you know how old he is? Usually the pencilling in the tail is decreasing over the years in semi-pencilled ones.

I believe he is 1 1/2 years old. His penciling seems to be a bit more pronounced than your turkey's. Where does the penciled gene come from?

Pencilling is a mutation. Not sure where it originates from. I found some painting from 1653 which clearly shows pencilled birds, so must be around for quite a while.

The pencilling pattern can vary a lot. I had some semi-pencilled turkeys that had an amazing pattern in their first year, but lost it as they grow older.

Maybe yours is homozygous. Time will tell.
