Was this a hawk attack? (Graphic photo)

We lost a nice bantam hen the same way last month. Hate it! Free ranging is always a risk...
Bantams and young birds are most vulnerable, but sometimes hawks will tackle big birds too. Your survivors are wiser now.

Bantams and white chickens... the one I found being eaten was a pure white chicken, and just the other day unnoticed a hawk going after a white rock. I guess because they can see them easier from the sky?
To the OP - do you have a rooster? My rooster warns my chickens of hawks all the time. He does a really great job of being a protector ; they will risk their lives for their girls.

Actually, I've never had a white bird taken by a hawk! And I have six to twelve white Chanties at all times. The young and unwary, and unlucky, are victims. The one and only adult standard bird attacked and wounded here was dark colored.
Most of my losses to raptors have been bantams, or young standards.

We dont have a roo. Seriously thinking of getting one. Just needs to be a nice one due to kid exposure.

People give Roos away.. maybe ...

If you can, try and find a Cochin rooster. In my personal experience, they are just the absolute best.
I’m sorry that your heart hurts; chickens are one of the most highly predated animals there are and I truly believe they would rather free range and take the chance than be “cooped” up. Take comfort in the fact that your girls have wonderful lives and never have to experience the horror of a factory chicken. People like you are their saviors!

Thank you. My hens are very happy. Today was hard on them, especially tonight when it came time for bed. Buffs friend, #1 chicken, didnt want to let any of the other hens in the coop. So I pulled her out, comforted her until the other ones came in, then placed her in the coop. She cried when she saw Buff wasnt waiting for her in the nesting box. It was the first time in several months that I sang my chickens to sleep.

I will consider Cochins. I hesitate because of their feathered feet. We have cold, wet winters. ...

Thank you for your advice and encouragement
