I hatched some chicks and one was walking and eating fine for the past 4 days. Today it seems to set down alot and kind of stands if you make it. But it is fat. The fattest one... Any ideas if its spraddle leg or if it just got really fat quick?

If you keep them on paper towels, not newspaper of other slick stuff, there's less likelihood of spraddle-leg.

Is it fat, or fluffy? If it's fat, is it's butt pasty? They can die from getting plugged up with a pasty bum.

If it's fluffy, and sitting around, it could be developing cocci- do a search on how to treat cocci if you think this is the case.

Pics would help us to help you.

I had that problem and he turned out to be a Cornish X. They get fat and then you have to send them to chicken soup heaven. I am still devestated by it but this is apparently what they are bred for. I got some help with people suggesting only a 12 hour diet (take food away for 12 hours) and just watch what they eat and encourage them to walk. Mine walked well on grass and blankets but horrible in pine shavings. I hope this helps.

It was fat. It died. I was thinking it might be a genetic mutation. They are Golden Cuckoo marans. Which the way to get them seems ok. I have had a few of all the same coloring die.... Odd I know. Thanks for the help. There was no pasting... or weird diarrhea or anything..
