Washed sand for run?

Does it have to be "washed" A local store has it by the scoop for $24 but it's not washed. I used a few bags of washed play sand in the meantime, but the play sand is too expensive to cover the whole run.
 
I used regular old sand from the gravel pit in my run and coop before. If my coop would have been dryer I think it would have been fine. But I sprang a leak and found it to be to hard to maintain. It was great being able to scoop the poo! I read here were someone used pea gravel in their run, I think I am going to try that this time.My new run is on a slope so I am afraid the sand would just wash away. If you turn you chicks out to free range they aren't going to be in washed sand!
