Washing eggs?

Awwww, pretty girls!

Was that egg a double yolker? It looks huge! Just a thought- before you crack that first egg, consider blowing it out to save the shell in memory of your first egg. I'm eternally bummed I didnt when I had the chance.

Can I ask how old Buffy was when she laid her egg? We have four Orps who are 26 and 28 weeks old (maybe) and there are no signs of eggs yet.

I thought Buffy would *never* start. I got her, um, August 28th and she was about 22 weeks then. So, um....(counting weeks...) she's around 28 or 29 weeks.

Buffy's egg is the small brown one, next to the Large white (commercial) egg. Definitely not huge. But a really nice shell, and she laid right in the nesting box.

Hmm, I just asked on another topic how to tell if the eggs I recently purchased were fresh as the chicken lady assured me they were (she said they were just laid this week), plus she didn't have them refrigerated. So a super "Chillin' with my peeps" told me about how to do the water float test to tell how fresh the eggs were and if they were good. So I just tested the two dozen eggs I had purchased which means they were all submerged in salty water (one was super old and floated, but the rest one to 2 weeks old). Now I'm wondering if I have now 'washed' off their protective coating. Any advise? I can't wait to get my own eggs, because to buy them from other chicken farmers, you just have to trust they are giving you fresh eggs.

Maybe you could hardboil them now. Next time just test them right before you use them?

I wonder, if you didn't scrub them, are they okay?

Ooh....maybe the same age as Moeisha & Jemima are now then.......but their red bits are not as developed as your Buffy's are. We thought that maybe they were younger than the man said who we bought them from (they charge according to age here so the older they are the more they cost). Anyway hopefully it won't be too long now......the waiting is very hard!
Thank you.
