New to chickens. Since the "shelter in place" order hit my area, the feed store remained open. Those troughs with little baby chickies got the best of me, and I went home with 2 straight run bantams. I have a flock of 15 today. One of the Batams is a little red rooster with fuzzy slippers, and the other is a cute little buff colored Silkie. I ordered a coop, and hired a laid off from work friend to put it together. In the meantime, I acquired 4 buff orpington, 2 ameracaunas. Another trip to the feed store caused me to come home with 3 blue laced red Wyandotte's, and the latest bunch included 4 more ameracuanas. All are pullets. I have a small house, on 3/4 of an acre. I now have 2 small coops, and just had a shed delivered yesterday. It will serve as the main coop. They are all allowed to free range during daylight, with a horse and a golden retriever. It is beyond peaceful to look out over those little busy bodies. There hasn't been an egg yet, but I am thinking it's close. The ongoing learning that has taken place is fantastic, and hopefully the mistakes will start to dwindle. I would consider this my first real "hobby". I love that once you are set up, that the chickens are so self sufficient. And they eat vegetable scraps, another plus since my little old house has no garbage disposal. BackYard Chickens quickly became the go-to for getting questions answered, and purchasing chicken raising supplies.
