Hello. I'm looking for input from people keeping chickens in Washington DC. Is is legal or illegal? Is there even a real consensus about what the law actually is? Does anyone have a permit and how did you get it? For the 'illegals:' How do you keep it on the down low? Do your neighbors know? There have been those two stories Capital Hill folks getting caught, but what is enforcement actually like? What are the penalties for keeping illegal birds?
Background: I'm a teacher and I just hatched some eggs with my science classes. Living in the city drives me nuts but it's the way it is for now. My husband and I are lucky enough to have a large lot (1/3ish of an acre). We have an awesome veggie garden which improves the quality of city life considerably and we would like to add two, maybe three chickens for eggs, compost, scrap disposal, bug control etc. We have been investigating the legality and feasibility of the plan, but there's a lot of conflicting information, even from city govt offices.
So if you have some more conflicting information to throw our way
...any advice, stories, experiences, whatever, are all greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone!
