Yup. Get ready for a career of long days (but also long weekends).

We were at a crossroads whether to go to the show but I just don't think we have time for it.

I'm going to put the april show on our calendar to try not to overbook anything. We have dental appt in the morning so wouldn't even make it ther until the afternoon. A bit sad but so many projects to do before it gets too cold

Well tomorrow is the big day... I go to pick up my new foster mares. They will be with me for about a month. We also start breaking down the buildings tomorrow as well. Need to haul about 20 water troughs, all feed bins & boxes... Dog beds, Kennels, fence pannels, blankets, tack, all equipment, ect... Its going to take more than one day to get it all done... I think I need a bigger truck and alot more gas...

Okay, I need to reask. How do I tell if my hens are in good flesh? I am not going to butcher them....I just want to make sure they are healthy. When I lift them they are heavy and have a lot of muscle on their legs, but am I suppose to feel their breast bone? How much of it should I feel? I mean, I am (personally) not under weight and you can feel my hip bones....is this the same for birdies? They have plenty of food in front of them, I am just worried that maybe they should be wormed or something. Their fronts seem well rounded, but I can feel the bone....tell me how to make sure.

We had one either black or dark blue bantam cochin egg hatch over night. So cute and so tiny!!! We have a new pip in one of our Crele OEGB eggs!

Today in the mail I got 10 BLRW eggs and 8 Self Blue (Lavender) bantam cochin eggs. Expecting another box of BLRW eggs tomorrow!

I'll be there as an exhibitor. I also rented a booth and will have some silkies and white runners for sale as well as show crates. Pips and Peeps (Jean Ribbeck) will also be there and some other great exhibitors that are worth meeting but aren't on BYC.

My name is Jenni and, although I have a big test next week and plan to study, it seems I always end up running about at shows helping out.

We are staying--since we live about 4 hours away! My husband is actually coming this time-I hope he doesn't get too bored..

There are definitely some great exhibitors there, and everyone is always so nice and helpful about answering questions.

See ya there!

Okay, so I'm really wondering about this. . . How many of you buy chicks this late in the year?

I'm hatching some right now, then I've got a second batch I was going to hatch for myself, but now I've got so many people asking for things I don't have room to hatch with on my current or next batch, so I'm really contemplating, if I did a third batch of eggs, how many would I actually get sold this late in the year?

I'm thinking Blue Wheaten Marans and Black Copper Marans, and I really hope it could work. . . Because so far I have one person asking, but I'm not sure how I should plan this all out.

Anyone know the chances or rate of chick sales come late fall/early winter?

Illia. I have in my chicken contacts a feed store in Washington that emailed me back stating they sell chicks year around.
They wouldn't be doing that if there wasn't a market.
Because of your location though it may be a bit harder for you.

Personally I think this is the best time of year to buy chicks.
When I have a choice I buy them now so they start laying by spring.

I would market your chicks with that fact.
While everyone else will be just starting come spring your chicks already be laying right when it starts to get warm to get them off to a good start.

Illia,

I've been wondering the same thing. I plan on loading up the incubator again this weekend, and I have not had great success with shipped eggs, but there's always the chance this could be my big outstanding hatch. So we'll see. I agree with Greg though, your location could pose a problem.

I know.

I am willing to meet up to closer destinations, too, but for a lot of Seattle-based residents, it is still a problem, because leaving Seattle is so much harder than arriving to Seattle.

Other than that, I do agree - Right now I honestly call our "second spring." Even the plants seem to agree.

So, do any of you advertise your chicks for sale BEFORE they hatch?
