It has been very cold here, but not quite a 2-dog night, any snow at your level yet?

Hey! Nope--not yet. I am guessing soon...it's pouring rain right now and we have a fire going in the woodstove...ready for the 4 hour power outage we're getting tonight--with 8 bantam favs in the 'bator on week 2! ARRGHH

love that last line!!!!
We close everyone up at night and keep them in when the snow is deep, we have a large area under a roof outside they are corraled in when it snows ;-).. We have never had frostbite on the combs, have had chickens the last 4 years only had a couple weeks though of really cold weather each year and we keep everyone locked in under heat lamps

Yeah--my dumb roos were out in -10 or colder last winter, STANDING in the snow and parading around...LOL I captured them and vaselined their combs but it was too late for a few...so now they all have very odd-looking combs (aka I cannot show them!) One of my light sussex roos also got frost bite but on his feet...

Goodnight Chickielady..
i don't know about you all but we are NOT ready for the snow,. suer seems to be turning quick.. still have a couple loads of hay to get in here and have not set up water heaters yet..
only reason I have 3 open pens is hubby built me some extras this summer, been working with my wheaten marans for about 3 years and wanted some extra breeder pens ;-)..
Thanks Rare Feathers will keep my fingers crossed..

We found we had to force our roos to stay in.. the hens refuse to go out.. haha but the roos you have to throw in lockdown

You gotta come visit, and see ?
I told ya we need little hobbit house retreats out here, and on the other hand, Phil told me if you came out here to the Farm, that you would never want to go home !
OK...another daughter !!!

He's probably right!

The only reason I'm a city peep is due to transportation to necessities such as stores, work, etc.
Within the city I can get almost anywhere I need given a little time but out in the boonies I have to rely on others for rides etc.

Is there a schedule outage for your area tonight? Is this going to mess with your 'bator? I hope you are able to work around it. I am so sorry for this. I know that the snow level is down to around 3-4,000 feet isn't it? 4,000 would be the top of the Loup. I pray all your eggs do well. I am sorry for this outage. Seems to me a 4-hour sheduled outage at the end of October is pretty stupid. We almost ALWAYS get snow on Halloween - well that is for the higher elevations and that was our theroy in the Methow....but it is cold out, why would they do this?

I raised Angoras for ever...also in Tonasket and then we sold and moved to Whidbey Is...beautiful rabbits..maybe I still have photos

I loved my germans and english angoras but to show them it was so much work to blow dry them out every day!!! gorgeous bunnies though..

welcome jenni B

At every show I hear blow dryers from the time we get there to the time we leave! Man, they must really love that breed to do all that work!

Gotta love my. . . Lack of customers. Seriously, I put up posters, and for some reason every poster I put up at our local market gets torn down. I have a feeling it is the other local chicken egg lady. Golly she has enough chickens to make one dozen a day, and they're all boring brown egg layers! PLUS she charges more, and her chickens get a fraction of the space mine do.

Well, I just have a few more eggs left I'm waiting on to hatch. . . . And so far I'm rather disappointed. That darn duckwing Araucana must have done a lot of damage, because I am for some reason getting clean faced Ameraucanas. . . . Which doesn't make sense! Because muffs/beard + cleanfaced does not produce any cleanfaced birds. . . . . And my girls are not Cree Farms Ameraucanas, so I know they're fully bearded/muffed.

I really hope they're just wet or maybe their muffs/beards seem small and insignificant on day 1. . . .

yay

I get to hunt/trap opossums now.. They were on our back porch so now they are stopping in the yard rather then passing through. Its a young one and has not learned our backyard is bad mojo for opossums and coons.
