Chicken math huh? So that is what happened. We talked it over and decided to start with 3, ordered 6 and came home with 8. Seems to be a common affliction here on this site.

That said, we are really enjoying our venture into chickens. They won over my DH, who never goes outside without a sidetrip to toss a little scratch in their run...I wondered why the got so excited to see him.

Of course we've endured teasing from friends/family that just don't understand. I'm sure once the eggs start arriving we'll have a few converts on our side. Should be in the next few weeks, can't wait.

I'll have to say between my dogs, tortoises and chickens not much of my kitchen scraps make it to the compost pile. Who knew being green could be so fun.

When I started with chickens we went and got 3 oh but the one was cute too so we took 4. Than went to a different feed store and oh got4 more than when we went yes to another feed store got a few more. With in 2 days we had 10 chicks.
Last year my husband was saying dont we need more chicks..
With our first batch my youngest son left eggs under a silkie it was before Easter. And we had a Easter Chick from our first girls, of course that son kept putting eggs under her and we had LOTS more.
They are like potato chips you cant just have one.

Oh no! Chicken math? That's what happened to me.
I was only going to get 4 then decided on 7 and I now have 20.
Same here. Had to have at least one of each kind that I could get from the feed store.
I was always bad at math.

is that what we are blaming it on now...math? Thank god! i was about to set up a support group for us! I am really bad at math too....here we go....

Hi all,
Love the chicken math thread. We haven't experienced too much of that yet. We did start out thinking we would get 1 of a bunch of breeds and then switched to getting 3 of fewer breeds but we came out with about the same number of chicks (so far! but those ducklings looked so cute

)

I would love your input on my coop question here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2077588#p2077588

and
my chick wing question here https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2077593#p2077593

Thanks,
V

My chicken math........

Wanted just 12 chickens, got them, lost 1 = 11.

Went to the feed store to get food and saw lots of breeds I didn't have, plus joining here didn't help, lol. Not sure how many I got then. Also got 4 turkeys, but lost one = 3 turkeys, already lost count on chickens.

Feed store again:
Saw ducklings, fell in love, thought, well, we've got a really small man made pond, I'm gonna get just 4. Got some more on other trips, lost a few, now up to 5 ducklings.

Got 2 geese, lost my female, now only have 1 lonely male gosling.

Gotten lots more chicks.

We went from wanting just 12 chickens to:

5 ducklings
3 turkeys
1 gosling
1 roo
2 hens
32 chicks

Total of:
44 birds and probably still going to grow. Most of my birds are of different breeds and if I have more than one of that breed, they are almost always different colors, lol.

My friend has a whole bunch of mutt chickens and one hen sat on eggs and hatched 4 babies. there is not ONE frizzle chicken or roo in her flock yet 2 of the babies are obviously frizzled... what the heck?
