Wasn't it Renton, Texas??? Lol

I heard this rumor too! Where there's smoke there's fire. Or a pink Texan Imp from the other Washington.

Geeze ! I think I would make more money building coops and runs for people, and offering knowledge for feeders, and waterers, than I would make selling my eggs and birds lau...Chicken Rustler...this is a good job for you ! wink

Exactly what I need! I would love to have a chicken mentor close to my home who would come over and offer advice about the best location in the yard - offer suggestions about coop design, setting up feeders, etc. Right now I'm trying to explain to my husband and his buddy what I *think* I need/want because I'm the only one willing to take the time to research and read the books. Which kind of makes sense, since I'm the one wanting the chickens, but I just don't want anything to get lost in communication. I'd be willing to pay for some trusted "expert" advice! I have seen a few folks on craigslist offer advice, but I don't know them or how qualified they are. Just from my few days on this board I'm already getting a good idea who I'd go to for some sage chicken wisdom.

pick a place that is easy to clean, does not get muddy, and not to far away from the house so you can feed/collect eggs when its pouring rain!

as for building a coop...
you can use old cabinets, shipping boxes, sheds, dog houses, just about anything really.
The cabinet one was really smart imho.

The A frame or the box coops are super easy to build for a novice builder. you just have to know how to use a hand saw and I'd suggest a power drill for screwing things together.
I'd be happy to help with ideas and suggestions for building.

If its sunny tomorrow I'll go take photos of my left "wing" and add that to my byc coop page.

buy the screws, washers and wiring (rare to find good scrap wire mesh)
collect scrap wood: plywood (hardest to find) 2x4, 2x6, etc..
and build!
Chickens don't care if its pretty or not. they just need a predator safe place to be dry and warm.

I once spent $250 on a parakeet, but I didn't do it for the bird. I did it for my then 10 year old son who had thought it would be a good idea to introduce it to his new puppy. On the other hand, I've spent a lot of money on that "puppy" now that he's old. You do what you feel you have to.

JustBugged, just wanted to say that I thought your post about was spot on. Many good points made. And while I don't think I could ever bring myself to spend $160 on a rooster, I certainly can understand why you did.

For the person looking for a coop, I see several folks have mentioned CL already. There are from time to time some nice coops on there. I would also just suggest that you not rule out something a little more unconventional. For instance, my upper coop is a 10x12 Royal Vinyl Shed that I got off of CL for $500. Of all my coops and chickhouses it is the best because it's easy to clean, is insulated, and it won't rot.

For the family in Omak, my heart just broke when I read the story about the little boy. The comments about his last 30 seconds of life are powerful and true. I will certainly lift that family up in my prayers. What an unfortunate yet striking example of the brevity of life and the significance of Eternity.

God Bless,

This is my chickens doing the anti-snow dance.

Snow level down to 2000 feet. I think I am actually a bit lower than that...but ICK. They are calling for a hard winter. I hope I got my chickiepoos ready.
