Wow, this thread is much more poppin since the last time I spent time in it. I just can't keep up. Kim and a few others have my email, and I would like to attend this years meet-up so let me know when there's a thread for it.

<waves good-bye>

Don't worry Illia, I got into this project because I love Orps and the color. Very serious about actually having Lav ORPINGTONS! Everything is already in place. I have exhibition Black Orps from hinkjc, korfus kluckers and a breeder in Florida which I can't remember her name. Got some great looking blacks. Try to get pics for you. As soon as Spring gets here my Lav hens will go in with the Black roos. Can't wait. The Lav chicks I hatched were from Lav roos and split hens to increase my Lav hen flock so I can hatch lots and cull heavily. Ended up with so many I had extra for wthchristi. She's serious about the project too.

Wondering if you know this. I have been told by quite a few people that the Lavender color was introduced to the Orpingtons by hinkjc useing a Lavender Ameraucana. I even had someone tell me that some early generation lavs they bought from hinkjc a few layed a green egg. Hinkjc says she never used a lav ameraucana but it seems a secret as to how she actually got the color. She just refers to a hen in her avatar as the foundation but didn't say anything more. Have you heard about the Ameraucanas being used? Is that even a wise choice? Do you see the Ameraucana body in that roo? I think he's probably F2 but really not sure. Obviously since the type is so off something other than an Orp was used to start the project.

Oh BTW, sure wish your Wheaton roo was a Blue, I'd be there in a heartbeat!

not yet.. white is or should be soon. The qualifying show was the Ohio National.

My little guy Romeo (on my blog) is full grown. He is the cutest guy! If he is feeling spunky he will sidle up to my shoe all toughness like. Not sure how much he weighs, he is about 10 inches tall from toe to sickle feather.

~~ You can also visit the Serama Council of North America website and there's TONS of information there.

It seems that a lot of beginning projects for fish and chickens are kept secret. The information that I have read about starting a project chicken all suggests that you pick out what you want first as far as a finished bird, then breed the base bird with something else that has those traits you want as far as colors go. Then after you start getting the colors you start breeding for body type. So the lav orp may not have the proper body type but in 5 or 10 more breedings it may be very close or maybe even the right type. If you were to start a cuckoo orp someone may take a cuckoo of another breed and cross them and go from there. Same would be for any other color. Theres really not another way to get color into birds that already dont have it than crossing unless its something like melanistic or similar traits.

The trouble starts when people start getting a project bird like a lav orp and doesnt cull to obtain the orp body style. It nevers gets better, and possibly worse.

Its a fact I got a memo from my Distrcit Director for the Plymouthy Rock Club last night.

Hey guys, there is a new Poultry source I would like to introduce to you.
Tony Albritton of Spokane, Washington has an ad in the Poultry Press, Dec
2010 issue, page 14. I have been to Tony's house, judged a show for the
club there, and I know Tony. He is a great guy, retired from construction
work and is now starting "Heritage Hatchery." He has been an exhibitor for
years, has had good birds, and it has shown in the shows as he has often
had winners. He may or may not have what you want, but he might, and I
know a lot of our 4-H programs need some Heritage bred sources. This is a
good guy getting started who will try to keep some pure bred birds for
exhibition folks. Wanted to introduce you to him and his hatchery. Thanks,
Jim Crain

Check it out and spreed the word for him.

Do any of you get the Poultry Press? bob

I was born and raised in Centralia Washigtons Grad from Centralia High School in 1966
the show you are going to is where I won all my first thropys as a kid in the 1960s. Mike Dooms, Jim Volk
Tom Durgan Larry Urban all of us grew up togeather at that time period. I am the only one who left home
and never returned. Blame it on Vietnam but I surviewed. Many of my class mates did not.
