ok guys, I'm excited by the prospect of meeting some of you at the show this weekend. chickielady was so kind to ping me. I've been heads down working like mad. getting ready for xmas and riding my horses, I haven't been up to much else.

however, I don't know where or when to go. I think by reading back 200 or so messages that I'm seeing chehalis fairgrounds. Do we have anything planned?
coffee? meeting place or time? phone tree? I did see the sign idea (sounds fun). I'm happy to send my number out of anyone wants to hang out. I will likely have a short person with me (5 year old) just to make it challenging.

can I buy chickens? did I see something about waterers? I'm too lazy to read the whole back thread....

anyone need a blue or splash ameraucana or orpington or mille fleur roo? I have a few extra that are going to freezer camp in the next few days.

How're your Tolbunts doing?

Yes, you can sell and buy chickens there. . . Not sure on exact stuff about where/when/who's meeting where though.

. . . I'm not going.

I'm afraid I won't be seeing any show until spring. It is really making me feel left out, but, oh well. One misses something at some point in life.

From what i have read, you are not allowed to sell any birds at the show unless you have purchased a sale cage. Doesn't mean you can't work a deal outside the show in the parking lot or whatever.

I also have 2 LF Lavender Orpington cockerels, 1 LF Lavender Ameraucana cockerel and 2 Crele OEGB cockerels if anyone wants one, please let me know!

they're alive. (good) They survived whatever 1 bird randomly dead (every few days for two weeks) plague that came through late in the fall. (even better) However they moved to my heated garage because I'm paranoid about them. (not so good) Now they're dusting my little black car constantly with bedding dust.
I know it sounds like overkill but I won't leave them out because they get their crests wet and fling water everywhere soaking themselves everytime they drink. I trimmed their crests a little but they still got them wet. My other polish don't dip their crests like these guys do. It's like they're a little slow, if you know what I mean. Finally I decided being out in the yard would turn them into ice statues eventually because they didn't seem to like staying in the heated coop.

I think the fuzzy blob of frizzle feathers is a girl. The smooth is clearly a roo. the frizzle is small and meek. The smooth is neither small or meek. He's is big and nice bodied but his tail seems to be on sideways. I'm wondering if he's just holding it funny or if he's deformed. That would be ironic I think after the trouble in getting him. I have 3 little girl gold laced to hang out with them and I can't wait to see what happens next. if my roo is deformed I'll have to find another roo... we'll see when (if) he starts breeding...

Sorry to hear of that.

The sideways tail is called wry tail - it is a genetic defect.

As for the frizzle - I'd like to see photos of it. My own frizzle I thought for the LONGEST time was a girl, until a bunch of Polish breeders told me it was a boy. . . Gosh I was convinced it was a girl, really, - He had no comb, hardly any wattles, a girly voice, a submissive behavior, a very friendly behavior, a smaller body, no visible hackle or saddle feathering, no sickle forming when the smooth already had it ALL going on.

Well, I looked further in the images and into him, and lo and behold, the frizzling was just simply masking it all. He didn't have sickles, no, those grew much later - But he did have saddle and hackle feathers. And crowed a month later.

Still though he's got NO comb, whatsoever, and hardly any wattle. But I like it that way! It so sooo hard to find a good headed Tolbunt, or Polish for that matter, and having no comb or wattle is 100% wanted in the Standard.

Mine are doing just great though, even through this rain. They're mating the girls like crazy too, but since the girls are molting. . . No eggs and no acceptance of the attempted matings. But, I'm patient!

Illia, thanks for the info. I've been avoiding looking into it but was thinking it was likely. meh. eventually there will be a tolbunt roo for me. for now, I will look the frizzle over very carefully again. I haven't decided on hen/roo for sure. I'll buy some more eggs in the spring and see if I can get a better roo.

Have you ever seen a film of how they process the meat for dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets, or McDonalds nuggets? Showed it to my kids, and they never asked for the nasty stuff again.

My sister is one of those ignorant people who thinks all the mass produced products from the grocery are better - won't eat brown eggs or real macaroni and cheese. Her kids stayed with me for three weeks the other summer. Meal time was a challenge. One day I made white basmati rice figuring her kids would not eat brown. My nephew asked what it was when he saw it, and I told him. "Oh, we only eat brown rice." I was impressed! So the next day I made some brown rice since he would not touch the white stuff. He gave away all of his food in anticipation of the rice, then opened the pot,looked in and started crying. What's wrong? "This isn't brown rice! It needs to come from a brown box that says Rice-a-Roni!

Chickielady - Manuka honey is from regular honey bees that dine on Tee Tree flowers, but those plants must be growing in New Zealand. You can take the same plants, grow them in Australia, and the antibiotic activity is not as strong. I worked as a scientist in the pharmaceutical industry for a decade before I quit and had kids, and I have always been skeptical of a lot of natural products (they are poorly regulated .... unfounded claims, inconsistent amounts of "active" ingredients, including no ingredient at all; some unscrupulous people even add addictive ingredients to make you dependant on their products...). Anyways, manuka is something I trust and I have seen it clear up some pretty nasty infections. I use it no my dogs too, but have not heard if it can be used on birds or reptiles ... i would guess it could. The raw honey form can be a mess to work with if you don't wrap it well or have an infection that is producing a lot of heat. The honey tends to melt and make a mess. You can buy it in a tube mixed with lanolin - for some things this works better. The honey gorm is edible and my kids suck on spoons of it when bugs are going through their classrooms. I think it can only work topically or down your esophagus. Once something has gone internal, the honey won't reach it.
