Hey guys... this is Drafthorsegal.

Welcome all the new people! Yea! I love it that so many Washingtonians have chickens.

Iron, glad you had fun on your trip... weren't you the one strutting about how you LOVED hot weather though? I hear this week we're gonna be in the 100s. Hope you enjoy it. I made my hubby move the AC from my art studio over to the living room alongside the other one because of the heat. Sorry to hear about your BAJA

Imp, thats a great shed setup for your four girls. It looks like you spoil them rotten. It's amazing what people can do with prebuilt things. I can't wait to post some of my pics for my own coup, but I can't untill my DH gets more done on it - and since we've had the house guest we've not had a lot of time. She's returned to Canada though, so we'll be off and running on it.

My computer got a nasty virus, and I lost all my email accounts, my BYC account, and my ability to post almost everywhere on the net. After a serious wipe, I'm back, but I am using a new account here (because I couldn't get into Drafthorsegal).

Weaveagarden - I've been to the Oakville sale.. it was interesting. I wouldn't say its the cleanest place in the world and I'd be careful what I bought there, but it was fun going and seeing all the HUGE roosters. When I was there, someone had a gazillion Buff Orphs youngsters that were crazy beautiful... and my hubby had to drag me kicking and screaming out of there before the baby lamas came up for sale. They had sheep, rabbits, and tons of pigeons along with the chickens. Anyhow, you can get the auction times at www.camofarms.com - the next one is on August 1, and then again on August 22nd.. auction starts at 10am, animal checkin at 8am... but I think they start actually bidding when the crowd settles down, and that might be as early as 930ish or so. It's not a big place, but its well worth the trip. They have a big following and lots of regulars.

shebug - Having no chickens is like having no sunsets! We need to fix that immediately! It's cruel and unusual human punishment.

Yikers, I just read up on this~ so much for my idea on how to beat the heat! That is why I love this site. I am sure by now it is all dry again under the coop - here on the coast it is 96 can ya believe it!

Hey all! Hope everyone is surviving this yucky heat wave we're having. Whew! I can't imagine what it would be like if I actually lived somewhere where it got really hot, like Texas, or something. Aargh!

Anyway, the point of my post is that I'm trying to clear out some of my little homemade coops. I keep posting on craigslist and having people flake on me so I thought I'd post here.

Here's pics of the one for sale:

I built this smaller sized coop to house my "teenage" chicks who were too big for the brooder but too small for the coop. It has three entrances: one larger people-sized one at the end of the a-frame; one small door to access the nest box area; and one medium size door to access the feeders. The first two doors have barrel locks, and the last one has a wooden swing lock.

I've installed a hook to hang the feeder so there's less waste and so it' more difficult for vermin to get to.

There's a long ramp leading up to the nest area. The picture was taken before I added coverage to the box area to block wind and weather. I've also added rungs for the ramp since these pictures were taken. The coop measures 50 inches wide, 42 inches tall, and 63 inches long. It was built using 1x4 spruce, OSB, and dark green coated chicken wire with one inch holes.

At one point, I had about 7 two and three month old chickens in there and that seemed like the most I'd fit in there for their comfort level. I'd say 2 or 3 full size hens would fit.

I'd like to get at least $75 for it. Thanks! If this is posted in the wrong spot, I apologize.

Yep, no chickens yet, but sneaking up on it. Scrounging materials as to have a great coop. Wire and Roofing are the main searches right now, but always keeping my eyes open for windows, etc.

LOT of critters up here would eat my chickens. Pine Martin, raccoon, possum dogs, feral kittys, coyotes, raptors (bird, not Dino) so taking my time.

I'm gonna wave my hands, see who's in my area. Perhaps someone would mentor me a bit on this journey.

Take care!

I hate this heat--my work is outside

The chickens are panting now, I hosed down the run and they are really enjoying digging in the cooler earth and dust bathing. I was thinking of putting a cooling pack in the nest box--has anyone done that?

I'm worried about my 4-week-old babies. They're in a brooder in the garage. It's the coolest place on the property besides outside in the shade (none to cool there tho) but it's still really hot. Do I dare to turn the fan on in there? I read drafts were not good for them, but does that count in this heat? It goes without saying I have turned their heat lamp off.

HI all I watered my chicks this afternoon they wern't very happy with me for getting them wet at first, but then a few of them decided that the cool water wasn't all that bad. It got to 95 in Enumclaw today.

ETA Well yes I did say I don't mind the heat but it was a real shock from the coast. Today is a little too much for this side of the mountains. My therm shows a high of 105 for today.
