Perhaps I should quickly cook something up, for, umm, two people.

Dh can eat apple pie eveyday...seldom wants anything else. He is a weirdo.
I think I am going to do split pea with my leftover ham, and some corn bread.

OK Jbear: Serious Qs here: What kind over Ivy is this ? A potted plant or outside type that will take over mt acerage ?
I love it and want to plant some in a pot.
Then, I have written wishes on scraps of paper, and will fold the scraps up and tuck into the boughs on the yule log, and then place it on the fire ?
And is this Norwegian ?
Scandinavian of some sort or german ?
I am off to do the deed.

But the Yule Log is Celtic in tradition, my mom used to make me one and now I carry that on for our family now that she has passed. The ivy is from one of my outside hanging baskets--stays there year round, so it appears to be pretty hardy. Survives goat lips occasionally even! lol I believe it's needlepoint ivy?? You could actually probably try and start those clippings.. all the greens n stuff are from around the yard.
and Yup--pick off the jewel-you prolly don't want it in the fire... (it's a Rare and Precious jewel bahah) you can place it all in the fire however you wish, although I like the idea of tucking the papers into the boughs.. might try that. Usually we sorta talk about the last year, reminisce for a minute--highs/lows that sort of thing. we toast with sparkling cider and viola ring in the New Year. Sometimes on those scraps of paper.. I write mistakes I have tried to learn from but am having a hard time letting go.

I have been so sick I almost wasn't going to do all this last night, but my son and his buddy came in from playing with fireworks

and he says.. "oh! wait, Friend--we have to write down our Wishes for the Yule Log!" Friend says "whuuut?" and Cameron proceeded to explain to him. I thought that was neat, and made me realize that some of our goofy traditions are very important to the kids. So--we did what we do and had a nice evening.

It is a BYOOTIFUL First Day of the New Year! Everyone have a great day

poor girls.

Me too! I am terrible, I would go out there with the treats and shoo away the top girls for a little while until one day I figured I would split the treats into 2 different dishes. Worked pretty well. But I only have 5. When I add to that number in the spring, I think I will need 3 dishes. Now I only need one most of the time because they seem to do just fine together. It just took a long time.

On another thread Gritsar and speckledhen said that eating black eyed peas are for good luck, and eating collard greens are for money in the new year. I had both last night, so got both covered.

Russ- now just find grammy's recipe for cat.

Yes, BEP's are for Good Luck in the new year.

My grandmother served them each Jan 1 and insisted we eat some, even if it was just a spoonful.

I have continued that and my husband is in the one spoonful crowd, but he does it to humor me.

As for collards. I will just be poor, but lucky, thankyouverymuch.
