I let him because I wanted the kids to have at least a full year of driving with an adult before being on their own. I got my permit at 15 also. I was 15 in July and got my permit in September. The thing is the kid has to be in drivers ed.
That will be interesting since we home-school.
We homeschooled both of our kids all the way through high school. They went to school until my DS was in second grade, DD was in fifth grade. I had watched my DS struggling with a formal school situation, and he was clearly struggling with self esteem within the school setting. I married a guy who was nearly completely destroyed by his experiences at school. I refused to watch that happen to my son. We needed make the choice to un-school the kids. In Washington State the kids can start community college at 16, in a program that all kids can participate in. Both kids started at the CC just after they turned 16. My DD got her AA degree at 18, instead of graduating high school. She continued on to the University of Washington, and graduated with a BS in Technical Communications last June. DS went for 2 years, and was on his way to a degree in water management, he did finish, but he had started a summer job the county the summer he was 16. He then hired on for another round with the county the next year. He was hired on with the county's road operations full time just before he turned 19. He is still the youngest guy at work. I swear that nobody should love their job as much as he does. He married very young, and he and his wife are celebrating 5 years on the 21st. He is a remarkable young man. To say the least I have no regrets with the decision to homeschool the kids. I have had the opportunity to watch a number of families that have homeschooled their children with truly great success. Not everyone will go to college, and yet there are many paths to success. There is a lot of thinking and thought that goes into deciding to homeschool. I didn't want to homeschool at first, but watching the kids self esteem develop was very important to both my DH and I.
