Haha, interesting idea. Well, one thing to consider is that mottling is recessive, so this chick is only a mottled split, however, some colors take mottling pretty well and will actually allow it to show up even if it is only a split. Far as I remember, Tolbunt is crow-wing based, just as Black Copper is. I really hope this little'un will at least get a spritzing of white on the chest.

Yes! Finally it hatched, and is a cute little blondie. . . . Makes me think though, honestly, will I be able to tell the barred wheatens from normal wheatens?

I can tell a barred splash from a normal splash, so, maybe. . . but otherwise, wheatens are solid yellow. A barred wheaten should have a, umm, yellow/white dot on the head. Wonder if I'll even notice it. So far, no. Either this chick is too wet to notice or it's just a normal Wheaten. But, alas, I still have 9 more eggs to go, AND, quite a few more Marans X Shamo eggs to go, and those I know I'll be able to differentiate with sex and barring vs no barring.

Yeah....they're not even my goats. They belong to my in-laws who are my neighbors. Every year they go to Hawaii for two weeks and for some reason they breed their Boers to kid in the coldest part of the winter when they are not home! Two years ago--it was awful---about 7 does all went at once with -25 weather.

DH & I were at work all day and came home to dead, frozen to the ground, (wet) kids.

Out of 11 babies, we managed to save two and that's only because we scraped them off the ground and got them into the basement next to the wood stove.

Oh how sad... oh gosh. What a thing to go thru...

OOOOp's while I was pecking that out you provided more info. Sorry. Sounds like there needs to be some serious discussion with the owners/IL's. In stead of breeding in early september they should be breeding in mid to late october that would give late feb early march kids 145 days.

Man! You guys are chatty! I am trying to read and catch up, and every time I think I am done I go back to my hotmail and see that someone else has posted. I think I just need to refresh the page before I leave. You guys are hard to keep up with. I had such a lazy day today, and it was wonderful! Hope everyone has a great night. On the funniest places to find egg thread
I have a bird (wild) feeder that is a cedar gazebo type with the clear plastic tube, you know? And it is about 7 1/2 feet up so the cats can't bother the bird, in hopes anyway. I have to climb quite a ways up my ladder to fill it. I found a Mille Fleur egg up there this week. What was in that little bird's mind? Great place to raise a family?
I have half a dozen feed sacks in the back of my Pick Up, which has an accordion cover on the bed. Sometimes I leave the tailgate down when I am lazy. Well, some funny little EEs and probably my Austrolorpe laid some eggs in a nest of feed sacks. Found that yesterday when I was unloading stuff. I know there are probably a dozen other crazy nests around cuz I am not getting all my eggs I'm pretty sure. I need an Egg Dog that won't eat eggs to go nosing about and find all my eggs. Or finish the new yard for my birds. My Speckled Sussex roo has decided I am enemy to the girls and has attacked me so now, I will be looking for a nice black Ameracauna roo... or Splash or Blue or Lavender or something lovely. I really do want a black one. I had a dozen black cauna eggs in the hatcherarium last summer and lost them all due to crazy weather fluctuations. Along with Lavender Cochin Bantams. Sigh...
