Clarence looks a little pink/pale in the photo above, but that was the flash wash, he is very nice & red combed.

You must have hand fed him cuz he is a begger for treats !

****************I finally took pics of the water fonts inside the coops but have to waite til the camera warms up..it is sooo cold outside, and is getting windy which makes it ten times as cold..goes right through your clothes to the bone !!

I want the rain back, I will not complain again!!!

For what its this is the time of year Walmart starts blowing out thier cold weather clothes. We saw the other day they had insulated bibs for $26 and hooded insulated insulated coats for $23. These are similar to Carhartt and a very good for chore clothes. I wear my bibs all winter and love em.
Just for what its worth if any body wants cold weather gear. These are normally about $50 each.

I'm back!!!

After a LONG day of a trip all the way to Seattle through that crazy snowstorm with a car that had 2-wheel drive and was quite small and suseptable to winds, we finally made it to the Airport to pick up our puppy, who after a long trip from South Africa was stuck in Atlanta for a day! So, he finally made it to Seattle just minutes after we got there, then sat in the receiving room for an HOUR while papers were being done. Then, to make it even worse, he was trucked off to the CDC for half an hour, brought back, waited another half an hour while we went through Customs, then by the time we finally got him, the snow was falling really heavy, so bad we could hardly see anything on our trip down I-5. It was insane, but the puppy was VERY happy to finally settle into his owner's arms.

The overall wait, from arrival to leaving, was 2 hours

The trip back home was crazy, we went through several snow showers, but nothing as bad as what we left through in Seattle. Just 24 miles outside Forks, we even waited half an hour in traffic, just to finally pass by an oil tanker that slipped and crashed out into the ditch on the side of the road. The tanker spilled 3,500 gallons of oil into a creek that led to the Hoh River! (An important part of the Hoh Rainforest) Just a mile down the road from there, another car slid off the road and deep into the forest. So, the cops, clean-up team, emergency teams, a few insurance agencies, and even the sheriff were all over it.

When we finally arrived home, 13 hours later,

the snowstorms were done for, but of course the cold was not. Over the last couple days it got so cold here that I lost a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana hen (

) and a cull Black Copper Marans cockerel. To keep them safe, I even housed my two Tolbunt roosters indoors, in my room, for 2 nights. Boy was my sleep short, but it was worth it to save them.

Well, I'm finally back online again after much other hectic news, and VERY glad to see rain return again! Even my indoor peppers were suffering the cold, as my much anticipated flower buds died off from too low of temps at night. The room they were in was well heated, but apparently not enough at night.

On the brighter side of things, I've got a few chickens leg-banded and ready to hit the Monroe show!! Yep, we even have a new car, 4-Wheel drive, onboard navigation (so we don't get lost as usual!) and all the room to fit our poultry and ourselves! I'm SOOO excited and hope this new car makes our chances greater for attending the show! I know my boys are ready for it. . . .

OK, got pics uploaded of the water troughs that are working so well for us !
Dimensions are about 6 wide by 10" deep by about 8 " long or such..and even a plastic folger's coffee can would work.
I can across this idea while at the Winter Brisk, and saw a girl had one of those tiny test tube type parakeet waterers in her bird's cage.
The bird walked up and dipped a beak in and drank from the little slot.
SO!!
The idea was born.

In the Blue Ameraucanas coop

in the Cuckoo Marans coop, and tilted a bit...

and a view from above in the RIW coop.
These 'boxes' are for feed & water in heavy wired dog crates..see the zig zagging 'fingers' on the top that slide into and hang onto the dog crate ?
Then DH drilled big holes in the upper back, and affixed big headed screws to the coop wall as tall as the birds chins..and the boxes come right off with lifting so I can dump any crud that might get kicked in, but that does not happen often as they are high.
The Cuckoo coop just got new floor bedding shavings that are fluffy so I anticipate there may be shavings kicked in tomorrow

Good news, I keep several milk jugs of water in each coop, that has the 1 T of clorinated solution in them..and so there is no frozen water, ever.
Even with the heat lamp off, the water has not frozen indoors.
With 23 degree temps last night, the coops were at 56 degrees.
Without the heat lamp, the coop stays 20 degrees higher than outdoors, just from bird's body heat and insulated walls.

POOP TRAYS IN ACTION!!

And a pic of Cathy, my favorite hen. Personality plus, she can talk to me and I know exactly what she is saying...and I love the jaunty beret on her noggin.
She and the others lay an extra large dark dark brown egg, almost as dark as the Blue Copper Marans.
And next to them you can see the expensive feeders I do not use anymore, and have plans to make metal sculptures with

OK..now remember you can use any small box like plastic thingy that is thick enough to drill and hang on a wall.
