. Now I'm going to take my BEST girl (Kala my GSD) out for a walk, then to McDonalds for a cheese Burger.
Have a Good night all !! stay warm

today was a good day for eggs for me... 7/9

but then i dropped the egg carton.... i hadnt closed the lid yet....
3 bounced out and broke...... my chickens ate them... one had the shell and the others chased it......
-sigh-
so i had4/9.....

Yeesh. Today was a decent day for me, egg-wise. Out of my 7 girls old enough to lay, all 4 of the current layers gave me an egg. (some are done for the year )

Honestly I think that if I dropped my eggs. . They wouldn't break. It is already hard enough to break them to cook them, they're sooo tough!

I'm just really curious, my Wyandottes are only 5mo's, but are said to lay through the winter - So, if it is mid-winter when they are old enough (next month) - Will they actually lay, or would I just expect to see some eggs come February or March?

Illia.

This is based on absolutely no experience with Wyandottes, or new layers other than those I currently have (all heavies). But with that in mind, I would say they should start laying as long as you provide all of the necessary nutrition and other needs. I would think that if they would lay next year at this time, and if they are mature enough to lay, they will lay.

Someone with more experience may have a different opinion.... We will see.

I am glad I will be huddled by my computer and heater, but you have fun.

And last, but certainly not least, Ronnie Roo: I finally beat you.

6 eggs today. 4 Brown and 2 Green.

My Today: Spent most of the day outside in the sunshine, all bundled in Wool coat, Wool hat, Work gloves and SHORTS. I have been having so much chicken fun that I haven't done laundry. Absolutely no jeans in the house that didn't smell of chicken poop. I also kept warm with nice hot eggnog laced coffee. Yummy.

Dinner was Breakfast for Dinner at the folks using lots of my eggs. We hit the 3 dozen mark today, so it was a joy to feast on them. I also gave a dozen to the man who helps me with my coop and chickens. And Fred's (NHR) first egg to her adoptive daddy who lives down the way. He is a man who is also disabled and has ridden by on his scooter often to talk over chicken politics. I gave Fred to him a while back, but he said that he would rather she stay with her family (roommate didn't want a chicken coop). Anyway, all is good in Chickenland.

Well we is gettin our first snow right now. It is flat dumping on us. It has been about 5 minutes and the lawn is now covered and totally white !

Who would like me to send this stuff to em? I don't want it!!

I surely want it! I'm dying for some snow. . . But supposedly it shouldn't precipitate until Thursday. aaah the impatience grows.

WOW . . I just looked at the Infrared Satellite. . Yeah, that's sad. The entire western end/peninsula and sound are all in the dry, cold, sun (sort of. . I never get to see it unless I leave the property) while all of the east is under a good sized snow storm. Even my old home in Utah is getting snowed on. . . Jealous.

Please, Please, Please..... Mail that white 'stuff' to Illia. If you blow it, I am pretty sure it will hit me instead of her, and I flatly do not want it!

I am going to be so cold in my little house tonight that they will have to get out the blowdryers and defrost me.

My hands are freeizing to the keys....

; Our little blue silkie, Tina, hatched an egg!!! I know this happens all the time, but I still didn't really expect it. After she got away with sitting on a couple of eggs for a week BF and I decided we would feel bad about taking them away from her. So, we decided to let her give hatching a go. We came home tonight about 20 minutes ago and went out to check on the chickens. Just on a hunch I started poking around under Tina, and lo and behold, there was some peeping! So I hauled the whole nest out and lifted her up until I found a cute little gray/black fluffball. OMG - I am in love! We have 9 hens and two roosters so I have no idea what kind of chicken this is but it is so cute.

There is still one egg out there, so I am hoping it will hatch soon. Do they usually hatch close together? Since it is so cold outside and there is snow on the ground I think I might bring Tina, her chick and her egg inside. I may just give her run of the spare bathroom.
I was so excited I didn't read the last several pages of postings (my goodness you all are prolific writers!). I hope all is going well with everyone else and you are all staying warm. It is getting awfully cold out there.

Oh - since this is our first snow this year we are thinking of naming the chick Snowflake even though she is clearly not white. I had a chestnut horse named Raven so why not a black chicken named Snowflake?

11:45 - Well, it didn't miss us. It is snowing.

I know all of the wonderful reasons for snow. But here where we are, we get plenty of rain for our reservoirs without it. And you can't ski here anyway. So I would just love it to go away and snow extra on those of you who love it. I am so cold. Can't wait for spring.

On the good news side, most of the coop is insulated now, and the light is also working. So, the flock is warm and toasty and happy. Egg production keeps climbing, and I am a happy chicken girl.

Except that I fear I will lose myself in the yucky cold snow.
