I was planning on using sand, but I have plenty of large woodchip because I built the coop and run in the kids old play yard. I have been pretty satisfied with it. My chickens free-range in the yard for most of the day, so the run looks pretty good still. I have groundcloth under the wood chip. I tried using woodchip under my Omlet tractor for the winter as that is what the british folks at Omlet recommend. It quickly became a muddy quagmire as I did not have ground cloth underneath. I made the woodchip 6" deep, but that did not help as the chickens would dig down to the dirt in some areas and mound the chip up in others.

That would be me. Tomorrow is day 8, so I think I will candle tomorrow, or maby late tonight. Will I be able to tell those that are "good" from those that aren't by now? And I should toss those that are clear? I'm almost afraid to look as I am already super bumbed out about this entire ordeal. the seller did say she would send me more eggs for the cost of shipping, but I dont know if I want to have eggs shipped that far again.

Im gonna go watch some of those videos that were sudgested earlier. Hopefully I will have at least half that are good. But think that maby hoping for 15 out of 30 is a bit of a stretch with as bad as the eggs were.

I'll let you know that I kept all of mine until day 18. I did check them for smell.. But I had one I would have tossed hatch.

I'm seeing a lot of wood shavings for bedding, is that what most of you use? I guess I'm old school, cause I thought straw was the bedding of choice?? Are there any particular pros to wood shavings or is that what everyone has been told to use? Just curious, I wonder if I should change? I use very clean wheat straw. Anyway, just wondering?
