I hadn't thought about that for a dog. I have designed something larger but very similar for the chickens. I want to be able to do what I need to in an area without chickens, but under cover and very near. I thought I would make access to the nest boxes, and have the fill areas for feed be accessible from the covered area too.

As a dog house this looks perfect for our rainy area. I think Moody deserves a house at my house, even though he is only here half time, and is a house dog mostly.

Thanks for the link.

Hi all - been busy so no posting recently but have been mostly keeping up on reading here. I keep falling asleep when I tuck the kids in and then wake up in the middle of the night wedged in a corner of a small bed with no covers.

Ron - I am so sorry. I truly wish the best for your beloved dog. All the animals at your house clearly get tons of care and love and she is very lucky to be part of your family.

Nyrial - I hope you get to stay!!!

Rustler - thinking I do not want you on my side in a fight!!! I punched someone else in my sleep once, but never myself!

Some of my girls are experiencing some odd pattern baldness on their tummy/behinds. Sorta where you would expect eggs to rub on a broody hen. Researched a bunch and no real answers out there. Common responses are mites, parasites, getting broody... I think they may just be bored and are pulling their feathers out. It isn't affecting all of them and everyone seems normal otherwise. Everyone laying well with an average of 7 out of 9. I just feel bad since life must be so boring for them right now. We don't get home until dark so they never get to free range. They have a large shed and decent run but it does not have the excitement of the yard (or the dangers). I have upped their protein intake and we will get some DE to dust with this weekend (although I don't see any mites) and keep an eye on them.

Otherwise all is well.

Oh - found another Washingtonian out there and am hoping she will come visit our thread. Are you out there???

One thing you can do for when they don't get to free range is buy a bale of straw. Scatter bird seed or what ever you like in the straw in the morning before work. It will fall down in there and it gives them something to do searching for it. Works great because as they un covering some they are also kicking more of it under the straw. You can then use the straw remains for your garden eventually.

I never tried the seeds in the straw. What a good idea. I bought a bale of straw and one of timothy grass hay for them over the holidays. They seem to like digging in the straw most of all. The seeds should make the fun last even longer.

Another thing that I saw online was a plastic cage to put a head of cabbage or lettuce in. You hang it for them to peck at. I thought this would also work for apples. Or put the apples in a tub of water so they can bob for apples. Anything to keep them occupied and not just sitting on a roost pecking at the nearest coop mate.

Could you chickens be molting? I haven't lived through a molt in years, and don't really remember what that is like, but maybe.

I just got GREAT NEWS.

Just got back from the Vet. kala has vestibular disease. which is very common in older dogs.It causes the eyes to play games on the poor dog. everything is always in motion and makes them dizziness. that is why they don't eat or drink. and why they can't stand up. He told me to give her dramamine twice a day. Said I should see a great improvement in a week. said some dogs take a little longer to recover. Some take as long as three months to get back to normal. but that is rare . Thats ok I can wait
