From Ethel, WA I don't know if they are "the best" but I do know they are very good layers. RIR bantams very calm little birds that lay a Nice size eggs. Mine scale between small and med. butthe birds eat way less than LF.

Wow, I can't keep up with you guys! Lots of talk going on here tonight. :) Thanks for the info, Chicken Rustler. I was thinking about RIRs... Was also thinking about Plymouth Rocks and Silkies, but I heard Silkies aren't very good layers..?

My silky is a crabby little monster, but she lays every day. But keep in mind my silky is a freak, and doesnt like to hold to standerds, everyone tells me how friendl silkys are, but not mine. She's crazy, and the exception to the rule. But she gives me LOTS of tiny little eggs! Plus alot of entertainment! She cracks me up, the way she moves, and every time I see her run I laugh.

Sorry Im tired and rambling.

Mine go into lockdown tomorrow night. Very excited to see what I get.

Mine too! We should be hatching on the same day! BTW - did you use the link to enter the Brinsea contest?

Yes, I did enter. Thank you. I was going to say hi to you on the thread, but did not know if that was allowed or not and did not want to jepordize getting you or I kicked off. Looks like we can chat a bit on it as long as it is about our chicks. but yes, thank you.

H**l, I've decided to sell some gold jewelry and just buy a coop and run. I'll enjoy them more than the jewelry anyway.

If I needed (or could have) a second coop, I'd like one of those made by a guy who lives up your way. Saltbox coops in Ballard I think? They're expensive of course, but his site shows how nicely his custom coops and runs have blended into some very hoity toity neighborhoods. I had contacted him but he was out of my price range, so DH built me one for twice the cost.

How true this always seems to be.

I was just thinking it was a little on the thinner side. It actually got to 75 today. I worked outside until 7:30, I left the windows open until a good 9:00 pm. It was absolutely wonderful. I hope it decides to stay like this. I hate cold.

SURE just rub it in. Well atleast it only sprinkled very lightly today. At least I was able to get the rest of the lawn hacked down. Gotta love that Riding mower DW bought me 3 years ago.

Well, listening to CL talk about her pupmkins and squash plants got me all jealous....My potatoes and onions are only right now cracking the ground and coming through. My tomatoes (I had to buy as my starts died that I planted) I planted outside, but I have to cover every night - just for safety sake. I have peppers to plant too, but again, will have to cover. I don't trust our weather, we could still have a frost. The snow is almost off of Omak Mtn, so it is almost safe. Peas are planted, but have not come up yet. Our weather has been crazy.

Hey fellow Washingtonians! :) I live in Bellingham, WA. I'm out in the county and still trying to find out if I can have chickens if I live in the watershed. If you know, please inform. I have a call into the county office but of course they haven't called back lol. As soon as I find out I'm probably getting three chickens. I would love recommendations if you know what the best bantam layers are. Looking for gentle birds that my toddler can be around (under very close supervision, of course). THANKS!!!

Brahmas are suppose to be really good calm birds. I have silkies so that I can hatch my own eggs. I also just wanted to have 3 chickens we now have 8. I wanted 1 barred rock one Easter Egger(for blue eggs keeping my fingers crossed) and a silkie. Then I read some here that some of them don't perch so I decided that I should get 2 silkies so that the one would have a buddy. But they only come in straight run so I had to get enough to make sure I get at least one if not 2. Then one of the silkies died the first night. (not warm enough) so my husband got a replacer chick - a barred rock and then decided we needed enough large chicken eggs so got another easter egger. Now we have 8 chickens. I waiting to see how many silkies turn into roosters. so far I think only one.

sorry for the long post
