Yes, this is addictive. I think there was something weird with the membrane too. He had pipped quite some time earlier, but not through the membrane. When I did pull the chick out and look at him the membrane was very thick compared to anyone else's. I had almost reached in and had cut the membrane, now I wish I had earlier. I have an humidifier running next to my incubator (not sure if it is helping, but my humidity has stayed up)...I love the bathroom idea - that is a perfect idea.

I am now debating on whether or not to get eggs for a third batch. DH asked what do I plan to do with all the chicks.....

Ummmmm, does it matter?

There was a few newbies over that way that were looking for chicks, look back a few pages or advertise ?

I'm thinking long and hard about the Guineas. I suspect it'll be a while before I make up my mind. My husband got a sort of hunted look in his eyes when the subject of picking up the hen in Tacoma came up last night. He likes chickens, wants chickens, thinks chickens are a fine idea, but doesn't want to do anything or pay any money to get them.

I do not like agressive males; the yearling bull is having to be taught a lesson right now because he wants to get out and either join the yearling heifers in the pen across my sister's driveway or go find his twin, (who is still in Oakville). Also he's used to the hours which had his exowner calling me before my alarm went off. He thinks my nephew is feeding him late after he gets off the school bus at 4pm, puts away his trombone, and changes into work clothes. The red bull is sweet as pie, but he also has thirteen friendly cows to keep him distracted.

Ian, of course, is a doll, although I'm going to have to feed him peanuts for technical reasons: they were only fed grain once yesterday, in the morning, before they got moved onto fresh clover lawn. I got my count-down to leaving for Tea Leaf interrupted by a cloud burst at 4:50, and had to take the clothes off the line when I was supposed to be feeding the chickens. They weren't shorted in any real way, they'd gotten peanuts and redworms and slugs besides the fresh grass and morning feed, but he will be sticking his head out the feed window unless he's distracted: not agressive so much as In The Way.

I managed to gain access to posting pics, so here's the only one I have available! This is our Ameraucana (about 10 weeks old) with our son (exactly one year old). We put the chicken next to him for a picture, but apparently she's taken a liking to the little man. He was interested for about 30 seconds and then started crying...poor guy.

wish I could upload a digital picture online, of this cockerel !

yesterday, in the bright sun, I noticed that he has developed some narrow gold streaks within the black, around his neck

which means he might be carrying gold, as well as silver, and possibly Columbian genes too

have never seen a similar pic of an EE online

quite a few black and white (usually designated as "silver") roo pix online, but this one has a pattern I haven't seen so far

black head, neck, and upper shoulders
some purple iridescence on some of the black feathers .. and now a few gold streaks showing
white breast with scattered black splotches
white wings with many black splotches, some lacing
lower shoulders and back are black with wide white lacing
black tail, some of the feathers show green iridescence

yes he is crowing, mostly it is a squeaky BEEEK! noise, but every once in awhile this gets followed by a true AAWWWWK!
(maybe not that loud, but definitely audible 25 feet away)

today DH is going to try to entice them into following him to the chicken tractor, by carrying the grain feeder over there,
instead of picking up each chickie individually, or loading them into the Varikennel for transport

IF we can find a quiet enough time .. they do respond to the wild birds' danger calls, also dodge into shelter if they hear a car, train, or airplane (we get a fair amount of traffic overhead from FortLewis/McChord ... jets, props, and helicopters of several sorts)

they aren't sure yet about lawnmowers, chainsaws, or woodworking tool noises ...

Julia, check your PMs ...

Awesome but how did ya get that hawk to set there.

That's what I call 2 of our EE's cause they look so much like hawks.

yes, all six of my EE beauties, look hawk-like -- but four of them have developed gorgeous fluffy muffs, which makes the resemblance less obvious .... that gold-duckwing coloration is so attractive according to DH

Phoebe and Dierdre are still clean faced -- oddly enough they are the two with black on their heads ... Dierdre much more than Phoebe ...

Ginger is so fluffy she looks like a stuffed animal ... full muffs full beard and what almost looks like a topknot --- "big hair" for a chicken

Just got a text from Michelle. She is getting evicted from Harbor View at 1 today. They will be transfering her to Centralia.

On another HAPPY note I may have a part time job. Got called today to see if I was interested (what work for money Hellooo). Still have to work out the details but I think it will be good.
