I do that with mine, but it works better with some than others, and then you get the other problems - all those docile cockerals looking up at you all confused when you leave them with the farmer for freezer camp. "mom, you can't leave us here!" I'd rather have mean hens than have to go through that again. Poor guys.

I'm not getting that close to the ones going to freezer camp, cause I'm the one that's gonna off em, so, AND .... I know me, it would be hard! Case in point, we had just moved here, I found an ad on CL for some young hens and went to get them, well, there were two that weren't from the same flock and they were getting picked on, I moved them to the back where I thought it was pretty safe, nice horse fence with a covered lean to, but, I forgot to look closely, there was hot wire around the perimeter about the same height as a chicken"s head, well things were good for about two weeks, then I walked out to feed one morning and I couldn't find one of my hens!!! I started looking around and I found her dead, she had gotten her head up around the hot wire and through the horse fence and strangled!! I started bawling!!! now, I was a vet tech for 10 years, I understand things happen and stuff, but it was the fact of how she died! Poor thing!! and I was mad at myself for not seeing the wire, (covered by grass) !!! My boyfriend thinks I'm nuts for getting that upset about a farm animal, but, killing to eat is ok, just don't let them suffer, that's my biggest thing!! I'm all about homesteading ect. Butchering your own food, hunting and fishing to eat, no problem, just do it as humanely as possible that's all I ask. God gave us animals for companionship and food, I feel we are the stewards, just do the right thing!! There are people that get ridiculous about exactly what is humane or not, just be reasonable! We'll see when freezer camp time comes around, this is the main purpose I started raising chickens......time will tell, it may be hard the first time but, gotta buck up!!!

I have eggs under broodies so not sure I should pick them up to candle the eggs. So just going to let them take care of the eggs.

Good luck on your hatch!

ok so while we are on the subject of pets and chicks here's one for ya!!

I took this yesterday, this is one of my young cat's who has grown up with my older hens, I was a little nervous at seeing her in the new yard with the chicks, but, after watching for a few hours she seems to just like being there!! This was taken a little too late, when I saw it I yelled to my BF to get my camera but what I didn't get in time, were half a dozen chicks were standing around her and she was just looking at them like.......what?

It kills me every time you refer to those guys. I'm going to have to toughen up now especially if I'm going to continue hatching chicks. Any cockerels I hatch will have to go. I've already had an offer from a family member to "take them off my hands". Listen, I eat chicken, I love chicken and I know it started out as a cute chick somewhere, but I've just not yet had the experience f knowing my food personally before consuming it. If only I could determine sex when they are a day old so cockerels were not fawned over and cherished.

It's a common story throughout BYC I'm sure. I'm certainly not the first city girl coming to terms with this truth, and I think it's a beautiful thing to raise your own fresh food.

Just wanted you to know I empathize Ogress. I'm sure that was tough for you, and I'm right there with you.

Love it. My cats give my hens a wide berth as the cats know that my full-grown hens will beat the crud out of them. It is funny to watch my hens chase the cats.
