I do that with mine, but it works better with some than others, and then you get the other problems - all those docile cockerals looking up at you all confused when you leave them with the farmer for freezer camp. "mom, you can't leave us here!" I'd rather have mean hens than have to go through that again. Poor guys.
I'm not getting that close to the ones going to freezer camp, cause I'm the one that's gonna off em, so, AND .... I know me, it would be hard! Case in point, we had just moved here, I found an ad on CL for some young hens and went to get them, well, there were two that weren't from the same flock and they were getting picked on, I moved them to the back where I thought it was pretty safe, nice horse fence with a covered lean to, but, I forgot to look closely, there was hot wire around the perimeter about the same height as a chicken"s head, well things were good for about two weeks, then I walked out to feed one morning and I couldn't find one of my hens!!! I started looking around and I found her dead, she had gotten her head up around the hot wire and through the horse fence and strangled!! I started bawling!!! now, I was a vet tech for 10 years, I understand things happen and stuff, but it was the fact of how she died! Poor thing!! and I was mad at myself for not seeing the wire, (covered by grass) !!! My boyfriend thinks I'm nuts for getting that upset about a farm animal, but, killing to eat is ok, just don't let them suffer, that's my biggest thing!! I'm all about homesteading ect. Butchering your own food, hunting and fishing to eat, no problem, just do it as humanely as possible that's all I ask. God gave us animals for companionship and food, I feel we are the stewards, just do the right thing!! There are people that get ridiculous about exactly what is humane or not, just be reasonable! We'll see when freezer camp time comes around, this is the main purpose I started raising chickens......time will tell, it may be hard the first time but, gotta buck up!!!
( sorry went off the deep end there a min!)
