I go to the Emunclaw one but only to take cockerels. I would never take the chance and buy something. There are too many diseases out there to worry about. There is rarely quality stuff at the auction. The times I've been however, I have never seen anything horrifying but that doesn't mean there never is. You want to spend money on birds, come to my place. I have lots to pick from and they are healthy and guaranteed. I am close to you.

You can only sell from your farm. Anything away from the farm needs an egg handlers license. I was required to have one to sell at the Farmers Market. I even had to pay a health dept fee to cover the cost of periodic inspections at the market.

At what age do silkie roosters crow? My chickens have about a month left till they start laying and nobody has crowed yet.

Chicken Rustler wrote: Uhm I hate to be the bearer of bad news but "normally" if they lay they won't crow and if they crow they "normally" don't lay. With the exception of the rare Rooster Eggs !!!! lau OK so here is what I know about silkies. We bought 4 within about 2 months 2 of em crowed so they goed. then at about 6 month #3 crowed so he goed. At 1 year I had a little chat with #4 I told her that if she didn't lay soon she was gonna have to find a new home. Very next day she layed and continued to lay for 7 days. Now she lays for about 3-4 weeks and then spends 3-4 weeks trying to hatch sawdust.

Yeah I know Roosters don't lay eggs but Hens might crow

I bought my silkies so I could hatch my own chicks. I have 4 and was expecting some roosters. I do have the barred rocks and 2 easter eggers. So I will still get eggs.

There ya go !!!! While the auction can be a fun experience. It can also be very devastating. And for the $$ you save in gas you could buy lots more birds from CGG. Any type of animal auction is for the most part a dumping ground.

Do you have any snow up there? I have chicken and yard projects I want to do, but the DH has taken the trailer up to the Loup Loup ski hill as there is an archery shoot up there this weekend and he wants me to come up after work. But, it snowed up there 2 days ago. It is raining and cold. Not so sure I want to go, but I will to make him happy. I will sleep up there, stay for a while and then come up with an excuse to come home and get some projects done...then I can go back up. That sounds like a good compromise doesn't it?

Hey, do you know anyone who would like to buy some pullets or a cockerel? I have some generics for sale. Some 8 week old crosses, some 3 week old orpingtons.

Nope, no snow, but plenty of the melted stuff. Our place is right around 900', but our friends at 3700' (Cheesaw/Molson) got a few inches the night before. It's just kinda dreary and cold in little ol' Oroville...

Your compromise sounds spot ON!

Yeah, DH is getting that camping itch and I still have a garden to get in and coop to build, so I try to do the visit and dash thing, too!

Oh, now you're tempting me! Everything I've heard about Orps, I want some eventually, but I don't have permanent housing for my own group yet.

I had heard that it was ok from the farm or at farmers market but anything else needed lic. So I wonder if that changes by county.

I was told it's a WSDA regulation that means state wide and I'm pretty sure I've read it in my literature. In the link provided by kellyandkatie it only mentions 'from the farm' not needing a license, no mention of Farmers Market. I didn't read the whole thing though. And I think some of the smaller Farmers Markets might let people sneak them in.

You have my sympathies. I had my Jackie dog, that I thought was chicken proof, try killing one of my Light Sussex chicks 2 days ago. I caught him, but the chick has a badly injured leg now. I don't know if it is better to have the dog kill the chick or just injure it. Uf Da!!!

she bit one last week and it limped for a while, its a lot better now though. I have field fencing around her pen but they squirmed under somewhere. I cant help them if they are determined to go visit with her. she does know better but that doesnt mean she can resist temptation. and Thank You Sadie Sue, at least it was a rooster, not that it deserved it but I have more boys than girls

YIKES! Were the heck was it and what time? My guess would be sometime close to when we got all the hail and the black skies. Scarrrrry!

Ok so I'm quoting myself here. The twister was listed as Napavine by Komo news but looks like it may have been actually out toward Onalaska. And it was at 2, right when we got all the hail here in Chehalis. Crazy!
Might have been just the thing you needed to break that broody of yours CR!

That was close!

There was at least one evil cloud full of long grasping fingers that passed here about 3:30pm, probably part of the cell that generated the tornado: I'd been watching the radar and IR satellite loops all morning and freaking out. When my great-greats moved here, it was with the agreement that there would be no hurricanes, no blizzards, no temperatures below 5F nor above 100F, no venomous snakes and most especially no tornados. Contract compliance is falling down on the job!
