well thanks to both of you! I had the idea to change it because my sis says to me, "what is BYC?" and I thought, wow, not everyone belongs to our crazy loveable group! so i figured if I changed it, it would appeal to more people and maybe I could sell some at the farmers market to cover the cost of some of the event.

Sadie sue, It is very possible to have two different dads. If both sperm contributers are in there at the same time it's a crap shoot as to who will fertilze the egg.

Chickie, the original combination for cornish cross was rock and cornish but it's a complicated, well guarded secret the final fomula that created the lethal cornishx. From what I've read it is a hybrid for the male and another hybrid for the female then that male and female are bred to create the ultimate hybrid bird. The parent birds are sold to hatcheries to breed these chicks to sell but it's a 2x hybrid combo that they won't tell what it is. Hard to believe after all these years the secret is still not out. All anyone knows is the first cross was a rock and a cornish.

I was thinking the same thing...my DH hates horses, he still tells everyone I tried to kill him with a horse when we were in High School..he just cannot ride is all...

I know too many people who have the same knowledge for it to be just me. I grew up with horses and my grandpa actually made his living on horseback while working for the Federal government.

Is anyone selling chicks or eggs the French breed that's a slower maturing meat bird? A couple of us were talking about problems with cornishx as a bird for fine cuisine (the thin bones and tendency to leak bone blood from unclosed epipheses is a big one) and wondering about heavy birds with longer maturation periods but still quicker than, say, Jersey Giants. We (as in the neighborhood) had always raised RIRs for fryers, but in a devious and possibly evil way I'm actually interested in something with a bit more foodie panache.
