I know--I told DH yesterday that it was about time to invest in another "window shaker" A/C unit for our livingroom.

So it gets hot enough to need A/C?

Oh yeah....we get in the triple digits for most of the summer....

East of the Mountains? Pretty much all of summer and into early fall, although up in Okanogan and Omak where RFF and 4312 live fall comes earlier; West of the Mountains it may get hot enough for AC a week or two every summer, if you can't close your blinds before the sun hits the windows. It was over 100 degrees on the wetside five days in a row in... 2009? 2008? and that was *half* the triple digit weather for my whole life. And last summer it only got over 90 once. On the wetside.

East of the Mountains there's places that are true deserts.

Yeah...we have sagebrush here.

We usually have summer from June through about mid to late September. Then by Halloween, it's below zero.

Looks like a hatchery Sumatra to me....her comb is a little too red...and her feet look peach on the bottoms? They should be bright yellow.

What color are her earlobes?

Most modern day Sumatras have yellow skin, not black. A few of the older strains do have the black skin.

For comparison--here are a few pics of my Sumatra hens....some are in molt and not looking very good but you can get the idea.

Hi Fellow Washingtonians! I'm in Spanaway, WA. I've had chickens on farms growing up but this is my first venture into the 'backyard' set-up. I haven't even been able to find info online about any municipality regulations for my area so I'm a little worried about that. Anyone have any suggestions for me on any regulations for the area? It would be much appreciated

You use zip ties for bands? I never thought of that. I tried feather sexing and I banded the babies to see how I faired in my "guessing". The bands were small and the chicks grew fast. the next band size up was almost too big for some of the babies and some of them fell off. I never thought of using zip ties. This is a geat idea.

Yes you can buy big canisters with different lengths and colors at Wal-Mart or Home Depot. I put them on a little big and then you have to just watch them--when they get a little snug, cut it off and put on the next size up. It's cheaper than bandettes and bands and when they reach adulthood, they get their permanent bands.

Zipties are one of the things which are almost always much cheaper at Harbor Freight, if you've got one near you.

Welcome newbies!

Also if ya want a special color zip tie (like bright pink
thumbsup.gif
) You can just buy the white ones then use hot RIT dye and make most any color ya want.
jbear ya forgot the bailing wire to go with zip ties and 100mph tape.

oooo... the RIT dye..that's a great idea!

I don't have bailing wire..does bailing TWINE count? lol!

First day at work following my bereavement leave. I hope I don't get a crush of folks asking me, "Are you ok?". Geeze, I must be somewhat ok - I'm at work !

glad you got it.

Birds are doing great. DD is handeling, carrying, petting, playing with them regularly.

We bought a trio of the little guys from Jbear. The DD has named them after 3 of the characters from 7 brides for 7 brothers. We have Adam, Millie, and Martha. Jbear, I want you to know that Adam has BIG ambitions. This spring I purchased 3 birds from CL.....Well, I have been unable to get Juliet "blended" into the main flock. She is a bit flighty and was getting picked on just way too much. She is an Ameraucana cross (spelling? - and I do not remember what CL said she was crossed with). She is a big, black, beautiful bird with shiney highlights on her feathers. She likes to bite too....

Chomp. She is funny. Well, she has been left in the juvenile pen. Adam, Millie and Marthas coop/run is a one that is "inside" the juvenile pen. Yesterday I let everyone - including the tiny trio - out to free range and play. Adam was putting the moves on Juliet. She is at least 4x his size. She would squat...but there is just no possible for way for him to finish the task. He is too small - she is too big. Most hilarious thing I have seen in awhile. Poor Adam, I think his "man-hood" has been insulted and injured because we were laughing at him.

I have used duct tape and zip ties for everything else. Never thought of bird bands. For me this will work great. Thanks guys.

Great idea, Chicken Rustler. I was also going to add that I have known many-a-place that has been held together with bailing twine and chewing gum.
