WOW... someone told me that Bumbles didn't sting. Are there some types that don't I wonder?

Yes I have always been told bumbles do sting and I have been told it hurts. I know mason bees rarely sting and the people I know who have been said it is about like a skeeter. I would take 10 honey to one wasp/hornet. Them suckers flat out hurt me bad

The worst bee sting I ever had was a bald-faced hornet. OMG....it was like a very bad burn, mixed with a hornet sting. I'm very allergic to bees and I always have benadryl with me but probably need an epi-pen like my dad has....my DH says that "meat bees" or "ground hornets" are right up there with the baldies in terms of pain from their sting. I've been stung on my head by a honeybee (once), stepped on a bumblebee (once), got stung on my knee (once) by a yellow jacket and then I got nailed by the bald-faced when I moved here. I was in a store in Wauconda and felt something on my hand. Without even thinking, I brushed at it. It was a bald-faced hornet and it was right on the webbing of my thumb. Man it HURT!

Oh we have seen the rats, I caught a few in glue traps, the big barn owl catches a good many of them, and the cats have left a few w/o their heads out in the yard. Hate the thought that they are around, but, we keep the grains closed up and don't offer them much to eat. Of course there is always the compost pile, which is huge

I am SOOOO sick of the rain!

It's just pouring here! I went to town this morning and picked up the crib/mattress & changing table my mom ordered for me.

Now I just need a matching nightstand and everything else!

Oh and my dun laced bantam...she's been laying eggs every day since I got her--and I save them up and put them in the bator....there is one pipped--that survived the power outage! I have no idea what it is--or if it's even a wyandotte or a mutt or what...from what I can tell, the comb looks right for a wyandotte....so I'm hoping....

I also keep my grains in metal trash cans inside the storage part of my coop. I moved my compost pile to the far end of the yard near the edge of the orchard and the woods, but not near the fence so hopefully I won't get the rats away from the coop only to draw in more bears! I was using two big tumbling composters, but they are full and not rotted down enough to empty.

Rats creep me out - ever since reading Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" I think of that boy locked in the meat packing plant overnight.

SCORE!!!! We got some Locust once and that stuff was awesome. NO joke... we could burn 4 logs and they would last 24 hours. 2 in the am and 2 in the pm. It was great!

The problem with Locust wood, is it litteraly eats saw blades! Chews them right up. We took down 5 40' Locaust trees, the first one chewed up the blade so bad, that we had to resort to the axe. I dont touch the 70'+ Locusts. To close to the road/wires. I trim the low hanging branches as they get heavy. If I don't the limbs hang so low that they drag on small cars.

The roundpen I built for the horses, is 95% Locust. I think I have enough Locust wood for quite a few summer bon fires!

So sorry to hear. I am not as smart about this as others (ok maybe not at all) but I would put em back in and keep watch. NOTHING VENTURED NOTHING GAINED!!
Also I saw somebody else on here that had some thing like this and ended with good results.

mine! mine were shut off overnight and not found till the next day. about 12 hours. normal hatch rate

I know there is still hope, but I realized a may have lost some too! I was just so thrilled to see all 18 shipped eggs developing!!! And now who knows what will happen. They went back in as fast as I could move. Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

My power wasn't off for that long (maybe 4 hours) and I lost pretty much everything...I do have one little egg pipped now...but maybe you'll get some to go?

Most of the ones I lost were due to hatch in a few days...so maybe if yours weren't that far along, they will do better? The one that is hatching now wasn't very far along when that happened.
