I had a mare get spooked somehow and go through a barb wire fence one time (in the 70s) the mare was cut, and her hide pulled back off her left jaw to expose a 8" sq hunk of meat.
The vet was called......another time another horse turned up with strangles, the vet was called again, lump lanched, irrigation & meds & a face mask put on...it went on & on.
It was something I could not afford at 15 years old with a part time after school janitorial job, and Mom & Dad could not afford it.
