Sorry I really don't know what kind of plan the ladies are hatching.

I am sure they will come up with an excellent solution!

Are you seeing broken shells? I thought I had an egg eater but there was no broken shell or yoke on beaks. Turns out I had a chicken laying a super soft shell so when another chicken went in there steping on the soft egg it just broke. Young pullets can do this. It happened to one of my Cuckoo Marans. She got herself balanced out & all was normal after a couple of weeks. Just a thought.

Welcome from a northern neighbor! Chickens aren't birds... they're girls, ladies, roos, hens, pullets, sweeties, devils in disguise, entertaining, obsessions, too good to pass up, chooks, chickies, anything but birds.

Wow... thank you, that sounds delicious and huge. Do you bake it in a 13x9 pan or something larger?

Sounds like you should be taking it easy with the heat, contractions, and such. It's a little cooler here this morning, hope it cools down a touch for you too.

Your new roos has a much nicer home now, such a lucky boy! He really got the spa treatment alright. Between crossing the mountains and getting dipped, clipped, and fluffed it's no wonder he's a little "shy".

Now go sit down and relax! (that's my bossy mom/grandma voice)

Yes, it's a HUGE batch. I always make way more than we "need" and then I give a hunk to the in-laws' and/or take some of it to work. IT's larger than a 9'' x 13'' but not sure of the exact size...

Thanks! I've had issues in the past with wild birds bringing mites into my flock and after modifying the runs (to the tune of $400+), stripping the coop, bleaching & treating everything, dusting 60+ birds, etc--it's not something I want to mess with again! He'll be in quarantine for at least 21 days and I'll be treating him regularly until I see no more signs of mites. They are awful!

I slept in until almost 7 this morning and when I woke up--it was 64 in the house and 60 outside. It cools down nicely at night. Now the trick is to just keep it cool in here all day! We got up to 78 in the house yesterday...which is the hottest it's been but compared to the 95 we hit outside--it felt cool coming in from outside.

Gotta share a funny story. Yesterday I put my girls in their "play pen" (which is my substitute for free ranging). I'm keeping an eye on Pearl (the black pullet) because she's been squatting like crazy and I'm hoping for egg #1 from her. So I go out to check and see Ginger, my avatar EE, digging at the fence-line and generally going nuts like she's REALLY gotta get out of that pen. She hasn't been laying much lately, 2 days in a row max., which she's already done -- but just in case I hustle her back to the coop. Poor little thing, she must have been crossing her legs, toes, and eyes cuz within a few minutes there's a pretty green egg. It usually takes her an hour!

I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't noticed her panic... would she have dug her way out?

I wonder, if she was truly free ranging would she have run back to the coop by herself? And if Pearl's in the play pen when egg #1 is ready, what will she do? This chicken thing is full of mysteries, and very entertaining!

I am planning on it. It ate another egg this morning

when I come home from work I will blow out a couple of eggs. I haven't figured out who is doing it.

Add food coloring to whatever you put in the eggs to find out who your culprit is. I used dawn dishsoap for my egg eater, that was 2 years ago, and she hasn't touched one since. Chickens can't taste "hot" and often like mustard, or so I've been told.

Wow, you all have been chatty! I miss a day and had 13 pages to read through, searching for CR's secret! And still no answer!

Sorry Teresa about your son. You did what you had to do to protect the other kids. He may come back when he sees how good he actually had it at home. I will pray he makes better choices. I have heard that "too controlling" line too. Sorry, but when it comes to drugs, we have a zero-tolerance policy in our home, and that is just the way it is. Our son is adopted, and was heavily exposed to drugs and alcohol in utero, so he is high risk for addiction, and should not be experimenting with any of it! He knows all this, and yet, thinks he is immortal, like all teens do. Sigh...

And RFF, how is your mom?

Gotta go and get busy. Happy Friday everyone!
