That would be my back yard... Dessert kings and we jam them.

Other then that I dunno anyone else who has fig trees....

I need to visit your backyard then.

I have Dessert Kings too but I just planted them this year in the hen's pasture. I also have a Petit Negri in the greenhouse, and that baby is growing FAST in there. Already gave me a fig on its first year.

I love figs - grew them in California, but I don't recall the variety. Maybe it is a good thing I can't grow them up here because they make my tongue swell.

That would be wonderful; lately I've been considering a week that I actually get the the Oly Farmer's Market a rare treat!

Julia, 2011: the summer I didn't go anywhere.

I would love to meet y'all. Wednesdays work for me.

Excellent. I'll look at the calendar and see what date works for a number of us.

Which sent me to Raintree and Burnt Ridge's web pages: they both sell several varieties of all three, which has to mean people are planting them regularly enough for them to keep those plants on list, but I don't currently know anyone with any of those. A friend has planted Paw Paws at three different houses, but she keeps selling up and leaving them behind.

I think, when I can figure out how to get the too-big peach down, I should replace it with one of the almonds: I like almonds, and peaches are not my favorite tree fruit (quince is: weird, eh?)

I've never tried Quince but I hear Quince jelly is just the best.

The thing is, Raintree supplies to all the west coast.

So I'm assuming the buyers of those trees are elsewhere. I'll say and don't mean to be rude about it, I just notice it is true - most people in the NW Washington aren't very adventurous at all when it comes to homegrown food.

I have a couple Medlars and a couple Pawpaws as well as a few Almonds, however my Almonds didn't like last summer until it was too late, and had severe frost-damage from late season leaves. So, this year, the whole trees have been dead, and new little starts are coming up from the bottom. I'm going to work about setting up a greenhouse-like thing to give the Almonds more heat.

That's a shame. What a nice broody you have. I'm interested to hear how the the rest of the hatch goes. I've certainly learned a few things using a broody for the first time. I did check the 2 eggs that failed to hatch. They contained fully developed chicks but there was no sign of any pipping.

. Poor things. So it would appear that out of the 10 eggs I had gotten from Candy, all were fertile.

I had one of those do that under my broody gal the other day!

Wasn't home when it happened and my broody gal decided to move over to the next nest with some recently laid eggs. There was a nasty stench and flies all over the place! Took the eggs, soaked in warm water for a bit to get the goo off, cleaned the nest box, and put them back. We've had two successful hatchings from them as of today with my broody still sitting on the other eggs!

I've opened and used some eggs that were a couple weeks OLDER than the ones you got ,,, so have no idea why that one went bazooka ...

sorry you had to clean up the mess (that was probably one of Christina's ... other than hers I think you got some from Anitra, Deirdre, Becky (the olive ones) and maybe Phoebe)

guess that's one reason I stuck a couple extra eggs in for you, it's always something ...

looking forward to what shows up when you candle the rest ...

and what a great broody set up you've devised ...

When I lived in Seattle proper, I saw lots of fig trees. The people I knew, with them, immensely disliked them. Said they were very messy, and no one ate the fruit.

Knew 1 person that planted almonds at their retirement home on Whidbey Island. They were not expecting nuts for several years. Don't know how they did.
