?? I do know that a minimum temperature has chickens providing eggs at an efficient level.

But it is more or less proof for me to tell mom and my bf that we don't need to go to such great lengths to heat the coops.

See what they worry about is that my birds molted in the summer instead of winter, some hens are a bare on their backs from the roosters (i made saddles, the roosters shredded them in a week, is considering making some in the future out of leather).

So the heat lamps are more for the pitiful looking birds or the ones with the large combs, and for them to warm up after getting soaked in rain.
I really like the idea of the waterers. i have over 100 birds and know some will be staying outside no matter what due to many reasons.
-sigh- my parents and boyfriend's paranoia over them having comfort are getting to me.
We did get smarter this year already. got a hose hookup to the water faucet to fill the waterers without many many trips with pots full of hot water.

Also my parents are worried about what to do with the ducks. I tell them just pile straw bales in the coop for them to hide in since they do not roost.... that and they are more insulated that chickens.... we still fill the pool for them to swim in every few days... their cries of not having water... just like food... they can sound cute... but then they can increase the volume better than our dogs, and its more directional.

Already had the coops cleaned out this week with the litter being piled into the garden already.

That works!

Where are you moving to? You just put in all those chicken coops and that wonderful garden!

It would be a 2800sqft, 5 bdrm/3bth a bit farther out into the country with 10 1/2 acres to boot. Right now we are in 1700sqft, 3bdrm/2bth.
I could have a ton more chickens and some cows!!! I would have to make a new garden but the coops are moveable if we choose to. We have been watching this house for over 5 years. We have friends that live next door on 30 acres that have 10 horses and are ex 4H leaders. I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

Wow, that sounds wonderful! I'm hoping the best for you!

I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd build a house about that size on a flatter piece of property with some soil instead of all glacial till, and I'd build a small barn with a paved or at least a gravel trail heading to it - all the animals in one building and no sinking in the mud to get to it! my property is starting to look a little redneck with all my outbuildings and chicken runs! I need to clean it all up.

You know that if that time comes BOTH my trucks AND trailers are available. We could move coops so easy as long as I can get within 100' with the trailer.

We used our tractor to get them down there. We can use it to get them up to the road and load them onto the trailer if the time comes. Thank you bunches, I will keep that in mind!

From the real estate side......if you are taking coops that may look like sheds and are of a size that a potential buyer may assume they are staying...make sure to write it up in the contract that you are taking them with you. For that matter....don't assume anything...write up the contract that you are taking them with you (if this is what you are doing)...otherwise a buyer is going to assume that it is being left. Trust me...this can lead to problems. Make it full disclosure up front avoid the hassel.

I did not think of that...
Thanks!!!

now i know how the runt of chicks feels when its picked on.....

i am a bit envious that you guys can even take Vicodin.... i am borderline allergic. if i take any codiene family or vicodin or oxy.... i get really sick. always have to take with an anti-nausea that starts with a Z.... but even then the side effects return after 4 days... then sick. I don't remember being "high" just very productive.... as stupid as it was i planted the garden in 3 days before i got sick.... otherwise the pain killer + anti-nausea = me sleeping on the couch all day with the dogs.

anyone have ideas on what regulates the body's internal thermostat? i think mine is broken.... or also if anyone knows how to improve circulation in hands and feet i am out of ideas. my profusion index is .10-.8 on a good day. i am tired of cold feet (wears smartwool socks, even in summer)

Have you ever been checked for Raynauds?

Or peripheral neuropathy?

Iron levels can have a lot to do with it too - as in if you're low! I used to be anemic until my hysterectomy 6yrs ago. Always felt cold even on the hottest of days... my thyroid checked out every time and my BP stays within normal ranges even during moments of great stress. Anyway, since the hysterectomy, my iron levels have improved dramatically and I don't feel nearly as cold as I used to. (Oh, and my hormone levels indicate I'm not even peri-menopausal yet!) I've always done very well in places like Phoenix, AZ because of it - even in the middle of the summer!

There's a bunch of stuff that can cause cold extremities or low cold tolerance- low blood glucose as well as poorly controlled diabetes, brown fat disorder, cardiovascular illness, or plain vanilla fatigue and sleep deprivation, BUT: it's one of those things you should mention to your doctor if it's a recurring problem, and one a good doctor takes seriously.

This is going to sound like an odd question, but do you have thick toenails? Thick toenails are a sign of peripheral neuropathy in the feet.

Nope- and the pain is not in the feet, but in particular wounds (well, now that I think of it, one burn scar from the time I dropped a hot broiler rack on my foot, which I think you may have heard of) including having sports tape pulled off my right shin and taking a couple of layers of skin with it, stepping into a coil of rusty barbed wire that HAD been a fence while chasing cows in the dark, in shorts, and a scrape down my left shin where I went over the handlebars of my bike on a gravel road and spent a week picking rocks out of the scab...all of them feeling as if I had just that moment injured them; got up and even with a totally sane, nonglycogenic diet my BG was 225; drank a glass of water and it dropped to 140: welcome to brittle diabetes. I get evaluated for peripheral neuropathy twice a year, and check my feet daily- this is neuropathy, all right, or at least PROBABLY neuropathy, but it's to do with shingles.

I know Jake has responded about BP, but it could also be a thyroid issue. I was getting really cold hands and feet, (and being very tired all the time) and at my annual checkup, mentioned it to my doc. He ran some blood work, and found I had really low thyroid levels. Now that I'm on meds, I'm back to normal. Well, I was never really normal.....
