So thought Id but out there that if anyone doesnt want to wait till Sept to get Marans eggs ( F Black Copper and also a few Blue Coppers) or Olive Egger eggs I usually have some extras, and for some of you it might be closer.
I have three lines, Bev Davis, Wade Jeane, and Wade Jeane/ ChanningGrishan/Presly

I would soak it and get it nice and clean also and clip the nail, Vetwrap is what Id use to wrap it also keep checking it to make sure the swelling goes down if not I do the soak a few more time. In the soak water Id add a littel salt. Poor little thing.

since many people said soak the foot i will.

now i have a question about the clipping of the nail..... would i cut it clean off? to the toe?

i want to get as much facts before i try this myself.... i used to have a horse and knew what to do for it... but chickens are soo different...

I googled clipping chicken toenails and found this:

"To trim nails, you can use a human nail clipper (the large kind for toenails) or buy a special nail clipper for dogs that looks much like a pair of pruning shears. When you clip nails, be sure to have a good grip on the bird and a steady hand. Enlist someone else's help if need be to hold the bird while you trim the toes. Only clip off the very end of the nail, avoid the darker area because that's where the blood supply is and trimming off too much can cause bleeding. Have your bottle of Kwik-Stop ready just in case. If you do cause bleeding, make SURE you get it stopped before releasing the bird. Clipping too close hurts, just as it would hurt you to cut your finger."

It came from this website which actually has a lot of good info: http://jackshenhouse.com/VSChickHealth.htm

When
you examined it, is the whole nail loose?

I might post on the Emergency / Injury's /Diseases & Cures thread here and see if anyone else has some helpful info to add:

i looked at it and it is NOT loose, i touch it and it is firm in that position.... i wish i knew chicken anatomy.... see cutting the nail down wont do anything because the WHOLE nail is bent upwards at 90degree angle. but its not loose... the inside of the toe where the nail connects is swollen....
if i just trim the nail down i would be limited by how far due to the quick....and its that whole claw that is bent and still connected....

Ok since I cant touch the foot you'll have to think about this.. If you where to soak it than try to bend the nail back down to the right angle and than wraped it. I dont know.

I had a dog that was in a fight (years ago) and its tooth was pointing out so I pushed it back in place and left it there. I did work for the dog.

What do you think?

Your more than welcome to come and take a look at my set up. I have my coop ( 9'x7') in the corner of the barn with the pop door going out into a 13'x22' run. Half is covered with plastic (so they don't get wet) the other half is covered with chicken wire. KMHunter is a couple miles up the street from me. She has a very nice set up for five girls. I'm sure she wouldn't mind showing you her's. We are in Woodinville. Then you could head up the road to Everett to see Nyrial

lol! I lurk there more than anything... I have a nice Serama boy and a very nicely colored hen with him--she is sitting on 5 eggs--due to hatch on the 29th...

There are pictures of him on my blog--his name is Romeo--I actually have TWO Serama Roo's but Sir is too big for breeding, so my son uses him for Showmanship...

If you guys have never been to Stevenson--ya gotta go--at least for the scenery! it is SO pretty. Even the fair grounds a very pretty. If you have time to do any of the scenic drives.. highly recommend it.

****My 3rd silkie went broody, so I stuck 4 more butter scotch call eggs under her!! *woot woot* I can't wait!! That means we have 12 calls under the silkies now, and 9 in the incubator.***

It sounds like it is not the nail, but the actual joint that is bent. Definitely no clipping necessary. All you can do is clean it up and splint it. Use that vet tape if you have it or any strong tape you have handy. Duct tape in a pinch. It will need to stay straight and immobile for more than a week to properly heal, especially since chickens use those feet so much. That's my idea. Good luck!

You are welcome to come see my set up if you want. I am in a sub-division, but I do have a fairly unique coop with pull our drawers. I also have a list of things that I don't like about it. MY DH was so nice about building it for me, that I hate to say anything negative to him about the coop. Also we have now spent so much on it, we can't afford to do anything different with it for a long time. Oh well uff da
