I think my DH may have introduced himself too, he was the chatty one with tonsured hair, glasses, and a black-and-purple vest; he doesn't post on BYC message board but does a lot of the chicken care-taking, enjoys looking at the chickens in the show too (he was amazed at the Orps and the Jersey Giants, appreciated the silver laced Wyandottes, the brown Leghorns, the buff Cochins, CL's Icelandics, the millefleur and porcelain OEGs, and had some stories to tell about when his dad was raising Guineas

perhaps, to keep the "peace" -- since there were some rumblings of discord about our friendly group in the days before the show -- we could put signs on the TABLES instead, that .... "this is a potluck, so BRING FOOD and COME JOIN US ..."

better to be INclusive than exclusive ... and there certainly was enough food to have fed another army ...

what do you think ?

Probably a little late to bring food at that point.

grocery store not far down the road --- or they could have simply added their own lunch makings to the table ... actually early on, DH was thinking he'd run down and get some fried chicken or something, not realizing that more people were coming and bringing stuff

So, as expected my husband wasn't crazy about the fact that I didn't get as much as I thought I would for my birds. So, this morning we had a conversation about getting rid of pretty much everything except the few muscovy's I wanted to breed! He wants me to sell my goats too!! Now, ok, yes I am a gimp, and yes I am unemployed, which at this point has been the longest I have ever gone with out a job. And yes, meat goats would probably have been a better choice for this area. Oh and yes I have ADD and there is a reason why I ended up with three or four different breeds at once!!! LOL I just look at it like, ok, this time I had to settle, that's the way it is, get over it. It has been one big learning experience, which according to him has cost up over 500.00 in feed this year!! With no return!! But, I know if I stick with it, I could build a nice flock and herd that would at least, pay the feed expense to start! I will say, that, I joined WFF when I came up to the show this weekend and I was very surprised at some of the great people in that club! I had expressed to a few who had looked at my ducks, that I couldn't take them back with me, I just didn't have the money to keep feeding them. There were three particular individuals who stepped up to the plate at the last minute and bought all I had left!! I am truly grateful to them, they have no idea!!! I also met some people, who aren't bycer's or WFF people who were awesome and knowledgeable and I learned a great deal!! So, for all of that, it was worth taking the heat!! But, I told him this afternoon, I love my goats and don't want to part with them! So, I will figure out a way to keep them, cause I still think I will be able to make a go of it, given just a little more time!!!

Well, what I meant by signs is like one big enough that says BYCers or something, ya know kinda like the 4 h signs!! LOL This way it will identify that we are not the show potluck committee! LOL

NO I'm totally down with that!! That is an excellent solution, and again, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but, look at it another way. It took money that I didn't really have to come up there, to spend the night ect, I spent money on food for that potluck for the people who are part of this forum ect, having said that, I would want what I brought to go to the people it is intended for, because I had very little left to go buy more to replace it. Now, my financial situation is of course my problem, but, at the same time I felt trying to sell my birds there, was not a waste of time or money and I met some awesome people and made some contacts that will benefit my business in the future! And it's one of those things, when times are better than by God I will contribute much more! OK, not sure if I'm making sense???

I brought name name tags, but got there late and by the time I got my food put out, I totally forgot about them! Yes, name tags next time are essential! I know I missed meeting a couple of you as well.

Maybe we could borrow one of the BYC banners ! ! ! PLEASE help me out here Terrie Lacy ???

Well, sure, run to the store! But we would probably never see them again (you know, one way streets and all) LOL

of course that makes sense ...

having been in a similar situation to you, I would have said the same thing

in some ways it was too bad that we were set up next to the main entrance, opposite the registration table, so it LOOKED a little bit like our potluck was an official part of the WFF show, rather than a private gathering

the placement, of course, was great for CR !

I'm kicking myself for not bringing name tags; I'm usually the one who brings extra "whatever" in case someone else forgets or mislays things; that might have made it much more obvious that it was a BYC function not a WFF one

I was hanging out in my chair near the tables, most of the day, and I would say that only perhaps five people who were not BYCers, came over to get food (I'm talking about those who were not INVITED by BYCers to come share -- ) and they came after much of the prime goodies were gone anyway

but you do have a point, about figuring out some sort of signage which will indicate that it is a BYC potluck, not an open buffet for all and sundry ... I think many of us were trying to be low-key about it this time because of some of the unpleasantness that happened the weeks before the show

Heres what I think. First, if I were just a club member or showing birds and walked in the door I never for a second would think the potluck was for me the way it was situated. The show catalog said 'your on your own for lunch'. I may have brought fast food or something. I would not have helped myself to a potluck if the show catalog did not mention one.
Second, there was lots of good, specially prepared food there that people brought to share with BYC'ers. If all were invited it wouldn't have gone far and some BYC people may have been left out with the food gone. We planned the potluck to meet BYCers.
Third, if the show people and WFF members want potluck they obviously can plan their own. I'm not trying to sound like I wish to exclude them but we should be allowed to have our potluck without feeling guilty. We can encourage people to join the BYC Washingtonian forum. That way they will know about the potluck and not feel left out. Maybe after seeing our potluck and how fun it was future shows will plan their own for their members. If non BYCers and non WFF members show up to show maybe it will encourage them to join one or the other or both. If we get a few imposters, so be it. Not a big deal with me. I agree, we should come up with some kind of signage. JMHO.

and to be honest, three of those five that I didn't recognize, were kids, who might well have been picking up food for BYCer who were staying with their fowl, perhaps selling or talking with other exhibitors
