Absolutely. One of the reasons we're still farming is that we have hay that gets fed to cattle and pigs (that's ground with grain). I'm trying to come up with some small grain or pulse I can grow on the well-acre for chicken feed/supplement next winter. Although I suspect, from the way they buzz through mint, lavender and lemon balm seeds, that I maybe should just cut the invasive oregano and feed that.

Well, providing I didn't get too big, I have enough pasture to raise pastured poultry and goats. I could grow grains for them too! I was just perusing the WSU site on small farms and they have a TON of information!! Also, I think I'm going to sign up for the Women in Agriculture seminar Feb 11 2012, it's a simultaneous seminar in 15 locations in WA. One of which will be in Kennewick!!

Isn't the small farm website/ cooperative extension great? Thought you might like it.

LMBO right now. I did not get home tonight until after dark...but DH was home and he (DH) went with some bread and played with the "new" kids. You gave me a good laugh. Poor Quincy. getting beat up by the "little" kid. He is being quite the gentlman to the little pullets in the pen with him. It is going to get cold tonight so we put a light bulb in their coop tonight...it is only a 40 watter...but it will put off a little heat. He will be spoiled here. Oh, my DH absolutely loves him...how big he is and how beautiful he is.

to nice for the freezer, I think all those life lessons Larry taught him were good ones, nice gentle rooster.

I figured we would be in the same building as last time in Monroe, but thats ok, and there is heat in there. hope they turn it on. I am not a club member but I will try to go down early and help them set up. I spread shavings last year lol. Elma is further from me than chehalis... and Elma has even fewer hotel choices if its an overnight show.

That is another issue with Elma,.. hotels. It's relatively easy to find cheap hotels in Chehalis. Chehalis is awfully convenient. I know Mr. Urban wants to move the show to Elma, but he would like to move all shows to Elma. This is one thing he and I disagree on.

I think Jules =:~) did a membership to WFF and I plan on sending in mine also. Hopeful that she (pettech) will do an entry next year and it was my first time entering. I have been a chicken show stalker for a couple of years and a BYC'r, tho non-posting, for many years. It was the encouragement of my friends and acquaintances on here that helped me through that gate. I was invited even if I didn't get up the nerve to post yet but chose to post first =:~) then p-a-r-t-y. Now, it seems you can't shut me up! The severe Dyslexia and speech impediment hide the gregarious nature of many. Just saying......

cyber hugs,

too little time, too little $$$, not enough chickens

I joined WFF also on Saturday. I wanted to use a couple of sale cages. I would love to show, but I really don't have anything worth showing yet. The JG may be worth showing. I am very excited about what is going to hatch here in the next few weeks. I am going to use a 90 gallon aquarium as a brooder for all the chicks. It may work out, because the Silkie chicks will be 2 weeks older than the JGs. I really enjoyed meeting you Birds. I can't remember your name at the moment, but I felt that we have a lot in common. I know that I missed a few of the BYCers, so I hope that I will be able to meet them in Monroe.

I am sure that we can get a BYC banner next time. I think that Monroe is a bit larger. I know that this past spring we were able to have a space for our potluck.

I can so relate to the sentence about dyslexia, I have to work at posting every time. I am so grateful for the spell check program on my computer.

back at ya!

I thin the monroe show usually doesn't have quite as many birds.. I believe the venues are about the same size but I could be wrong.

Sorry, I didn't see anything to be afeerd of?? NOW..... SUNNYSIDE WA !!! That's where you DON'T want to be when the sun goes black!!! I'm just sayn!!!

Well when ya get to PeEll or Packwood (opposite ends of the county) the family trees just don't branch out.

That's because most people moved out of PeEll in 1951 when the sawmill closed except a few who still spoke mostly Polish. I know that because my parents moved there in July of 1951 for Dad to be the millwright, and moved away in October; I was born in May of 1952, so it was a story I heard often

Everybody I know from Packwood was a member of either of the two families who had the snowplow and road maintenance contracts for White Pass, but now there's a hotel there, and a conference center that has big-name musical acts. And at least until last year, a thousand elk that come down out of the hills and scare the people buying gasoline at the place that sells Subway sammiches.

It takes a cup of salt and a cup of alum to tan 6-9 rabbit skins (first pickle) and the same amount for the second round. So it wouldn't take very much for just one Horace.

When we get the new Icees on Thursday, I shall be removing some of my current flock to the "Green Mile" room for Saturday doom. So, I'm thinking of trying some chicken skins too. I'll keep ya posted!

One thing I know about pasture is that it lasts longer and feeds better if you have sufficient fences to rotate your animals off it at regular, short, intervals. I can carry 25 cow-calf pairs here with six pastures vs 15 with one. The problem of course is fences; the problem is *always* fences. Well, and watering troughs: what really killed our ability to do managed grazing was my cousin's wife insisting that her horses needed a separate acre, which cut us off from *three* watering trough positions.

Remember also that unless you have your own well or some sort of protected water-right with your property you'll be limited on irrigating your pasture, and plan accordingly. I will spare you a handful of anecdotes about showering at my aunt's house on an apple orchard in Teiton.

I need to take a picture of that house.

That's a nice road, 395- it goes through some of the ponds at the high end of the Potholes, and in late May/ early June there's iris and camas and prairie star blooming everywhere.

A few interesting chicken signs from Etsy...

P.S. the OEs will have feathered shanks, and at maturity (pol) have a bit taller points on their comb than a regular Am.

Here I'll take a newbie stab at it just because I might win a Kewpie doll. I'd guess that #1 with the longer tail feathers is the Olive Egger and #2 is the Ameraucana. I only say that because all of my EE roos have long thin tails like that. If I win, I'll donate my prize back to the carnival.

I saw you a few times - you were very busy

Once I thought I had caught your eye and waved, only to have some really freaked out lady wave back --- I think I frightened her, being evil and all

Well I'm sorry I missed you VF. At one point I know I asked someone if you were there and they didn't know. If I'd recognized you I would have introduced myself.
